Vessels Run Aground in the Rivers of the Drought-hit Amazon Region

A barge carrying three trucks and 2,000 empty cooking gas cylinders lies stranded on the vast sand banks of a diminished Rio Negro river after running aground last month, highlighting the plight of river transport in the Amazon region hit by severe drought.Officials warned that low river levels risk disrupting grains exports from nearby farm states. On the Madeira, they said barge routes used by grain firms such as Cargill, Bunge and Amaggi, are open but loads are being reduced as a precaution.Shipping and logistics group A.P.

President Energy Strikes Oil in Argentina

UK-based oil and gas company President Energy President Energy has encountered oil in the third and final well of its current drill programme at the Puesto Flores concession in Argentina.Well PF0 1005 has been drilled, logged, cased and cemented to 2,360 metres both on time and on budget, the company focusing primarily on high margin production opportunities in Latin America said.Both the Punta Rosada primary target and the Lotena formation secondary target resulted in good oil shows while drilling and are shown by electronic logs to be encouraging with 18 metres of net oil pay determined to be tested having good oil saturation and porosity.

Liebherr Scores Several RTG Orders

DP World Asian Terminals Inc. has placed an order with Liebherr Container Cranes for a further five RTGs at its Manila facility following an order of two units that were commissioned earlier in 2014 at the port. The RTGs feature numerous environmental, safety and productivity technologies, Liebherr said. Alianca Holds Naming Ceremony for New Container Ship

With the Fernão de Magalhães, Aliança has christened the second of four identical new container ships for its cabotage fleet. The Naming Ceremony was held on September 26 at the container port of Porto Chibatão on the Rio Negro in Manaus. The Sponsor of the ship is Dionéia Thomas, the wife of Julian Thomas, who is General Manager Region South America East Coast of Hamburg Süd and Aliança. Dr. h.c. August Oetker, Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Oetker Group and Partner of Dr. August Oetker KG, and Dr. Ottmar Gast, Chairman of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd, also took part in the ceremony. With the container ship “Fernão de Magalhães” the Hamburg Süd subsidiary Aliança is continuing to modernize its cabotage service fleet.

CMB’s Executive Committee Reviews First-Quarter Results

The consolidated result for the first quarter 2012 amounts to $71.608.000 (2011: $4.775.000). Bocimar contributed $31.766.000 (2011: $22.897.000) to the consolidated result for the first quarter of 2012. This contribution includes a capital gain of $24.122.000 on the sale of 5.200.000 shares FMG. Following these sales, the Group continues to maintain a stake of 33.000.000 shares in FMG. Notwithstanding increased scrapping and a healthy demand for tonnage – mainly from China, the dry bulk markets – the Capesize market, in particular – have not yet recovered from the significant decline seen at the start of the year. This decline was mainly due to the excess influx of new tonnage and serious disruptions in exports from Brazil and Australia.

CMB Acquires Dry Bulk Asset

The Board of Directors of CMB met pursuant to the provisions of the Belgian Code of Companies relating to the existence of conflicts of interest and authorized the company to acquire the dry bulk assets of Delphis on the basis of current market values. Delphis is a subsidiary of SAVERCO, one of CMB’s reference shareholders. The acquisition will include a 50% participating interest in the joint venture company Ocean Capes Limited, owner of the capesize vessels Mineral Subic (2011-179.397 dwt), Lake Dolphin (2011-179.418 dwt) and Bulk Canada (2012-179.397 dwt). The remaining 50% will be held by the joint venture partner Boxlog. The Lake Dolphin and the Bulk Canada are on bareboat charter to CMB and Boxlog, respectively.

Robert Allan Ltd. In Manaus

There are probably more Robert Allan-designed ship docking tugs under construction world wide than any other design. So it is not surprising to see one under construction at the Estaleiros Rio Negro Ltda. (ERIN Shipyard) in Manaus, Brazil. It is undoubtedly the only Rampat 2400 being built in a yard1000 miles from the sea. But then Manaus, like so much of contemporary Brazil demands superlatives for accuracy. The first of three Rampart 2400 ship docking tugs under construction at the yard is showing the distinctive Robert Allan Ltd. lines.

Cummins Power for Amazon Tug

The Cummins distributor in Manaus Brazil has recently performed sea trials on a new 3,200 hp harbour tug prior to delivery to the owner J. F. Oliveira Navegation Ltda. The Jos Guilherme IV was built by the Estaleiro Rio Negro Ltda at Manaus on the Amazon River. The 82 by 32.8 ft boat has a molded depth of 17 ft and a 9 ft design draft. Powered by a pair of Cummins KTA50-M main engines, each developing 1,600 hp at 1,800 rpm the boat has a 40-ton bollard pull and a 13.1-Knot free running speed. The main engines turn a pair of HRP model 6111WM aziuthing Z-drives.

Rio Negro Christened in Korea

The sponsor of the Rio Negro is Daniela Oetker, wife of Alexander Oetker, Managing Director of the shipping company A.O. Schiffahrt GmbH & Co. KG. The Rio Negro is named after a tributary of the Amazon which rises in and then flows into the Amazon in (). Following delivery on November 4, 2008, the Rio Negro will initially be deployed in Hamburg Süd's New Good Hope Express Service, which connects Asia and with South America East Coast. She is then scheduled to be phased into the shipping group's - South America East Coast Service in March/April 2009.

Acomarin and Hermasa Enter Agreement

ACOMARIN Engineering, Ltd. has entered into an agreement with HERMASA Navegacao da Amazonia S.A. of Brazil to supply them with three new Articulated Tug and Barge (ATB) Coupling Systems plus two additional socket plates for barges only. for retrofitting the tug “Aquarius” and the barge “Mir” designed after S.S.P.A. towing tank test. The other two sets plus the barge socket plates are for new construction. Tug Hull No. 1613 and 1614 and Barge Hull No. 1610, 1611, 1612, and 1615 will be built by ERIN Shipyards (ERIN- Estaleiros Rio Negro, Ltda.) in Manaus, Brazil. INTEROCEAN Engineering and Ship Management Ltda. of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil designed these new tugs and barges with ABS class certification. ERIN Shipyard will also do the installation of the ATB Coupling System.
