IACS Adopts New Unified Requirement on Ammonia Releases

The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has developed a Unified Requirement (URH1) covering the release of ammonia from the onboard systems for bunkering, storing, preparing and using ammonia as fuel.IACS URH1 aligns with the Recommendations from U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and establishes that an ammonia concentration of 300 ppm or more is immediately dangerous, and a concentration of 25 ppm or more is dangerous if the exposure is longer than eight hours.Additionally…

IACS Announces LR's Nick Brown as Incoming Council Chair

The International Association of Classification Societies has named Lloyd’s Register CEO Nick Brown as its Incoming Council Chair.Brown will take up the role on July 1 this year, marking the first time that the IACS Chair has been chosen by the Association’s Members and not by rotation, a move that follows governance changes announced in December last year. As part of those changes, Brown’s term of office will run until December 31, 2023.“I am honored to have been named Chair of the International Association of Classification Societies,” Brown said.

Chairman of IACS Commends Association’s Achievements

Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, who will hand over the reins of  International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) in July, examined how the association had evolved during his time as Chairman, while speaking at the Posidonia trade fair in Athens. In an industry undergoing rapid change, the IACS Chairman identified the need for classification societies and IACS itself to be adaptable and prepared for change, while staying true to the core purpose of classification. Ørbeck-Nilssen said that over the past year great progress had been made in modernising classification to deal with the digital transformation of shipping: “I’m pleased to see the progress that was made in modernising the concept of class, to adapt to the digital transformation we see in shipping today.

IACS Chairman Unveils Future Vision

Quality, modernisation and transparency have been the three fundamental themes of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) during DNV GL’s Chairmanship, and this approach is widely reflected in IACS’ 2017 Annual Review which was presented in London today by IACS Chairman Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen. Selektope wins European Marine Engineering Award

Gothenburg-based I-Tech’s Selektope antifouling agent has secured one of the prestigious European Marine Engineering Awards 2016, in recognition of the breakthrough marine coating ingredient’s Environmental Performance. The Award was presented by Robert Ashdown, Secretary General of the International Association of Classification Societies at the European Marine Engineering Conference gala dinner in Amsterdam on 13th April 2016. IACS Chairman Meets Industry Stakeholders b

ABS Chairman, President and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki has taken part in a series of meetings with maritime industry stakeholders in his capacity as chairman of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). Together with IACS Secretary-General Robert Ashdown, Wiernicki also hosted a press conference at which he laid out the organization's work program for the coming year. Wiernicki assumed the chairmanship of IACS in July 2015 and will lead the organization at a challenging time for the industry. "Increasingly complex regulations, the advance of new technology and the increasing importance of the man-machine interface makes IACS' industry leadership more critical than ever in helping the industry manage these technical risks," says Wiernicki.

Green Ship Technology Conference

The 6th Annual Green Ship Technology (GST) conference will provide insight into the progress of measuring, managing and mitigating shipping’s contribution to climate change. Coming shortly after the intercessional meeting of the IMO’s greenhouse gas working group and ahead of the 59th session of its Marine Environment Protection Committee in July, GST 2009 will hear the views of regulators in discussion and debate with industry organizations and shipping experts. IMO Marine Environment Division director Miguel Palomares and the European Commission’s Mark Major are among those set to take part in this two day conference. Proceedings will be guided by chairman of the IMO MEPC, Andreas Chrysostomou. The conference takes place this year in Hamburg on March 24-25.
