The Trustees of the Robert Allan Memorial Scholarship Trust and Robert Allan Ltd. Have awarded two scholarships for the 2023/2024 academic year.Awards have been made to Samuel Shanks of Port Alberni, BC, and Zachary Greenham of St. John’s, Newfoundland.Shanks is a second-year student of mechanical engineering at the University of Victoria, focussed on a career in marine engineering. Throughout high school and university he has gained considerable experience working in various aspects of the marine world.Greenham is a fourth-year student of naval architecture at Memorial University.

Robert Allan founded Robert Allan Ltd. in 1930 when Allan commenced private practice as a consulting Naval Architect after serving as Technical Manager of a local major shipyard. In the 90 years that have passed, the organization has evolved from a one-man shop to a global powerhouse in the business of naval architecture and marine design. The trustees of the Robert Allan Memorial Scholarship Trust have awarded the scholarship for 2017 to Taryn Loutit. Loutit is a fourth year mechanical engineering student at the University of Victoria with a passion for and an objective to pursue a career in naval architecture and marine engineering. She has an outstanding academic record and has completed five co-op work terms with marine-related businesses. The Robert Allan Memorial Scholarship Trust was initiated in 1982 from a bequest by the late Robert F. Allan, and with support from his many industry friends and colleagues.

Over the last few years, as the design output from Robert Allan Ltd. to the global tugboat community began to border on the prodigious, we were often asked, “How many tugs has your company designed?” Until very recently we really did not have a good handle on that number, so the answer was usually either “a lot” or “many hundreds”, neither of which were particularly illuminating. So a search was begun late in 2016 to review our archives and try to determine the tug tally much more precisely. Would we rival Helen? Where did it all begin?

Some 200 delegates from all around Turkey attended the Pilotage & Towage Services Technologies Congress in Izmir, an event supported by shipbuilder Sanmar, whose Projects Director Ali Gurun presented a paper about technical specification of modern harbor and terminal tug boats outside of Turkey and the effect of this on Turkish fleet. The 20th BC Tugboat Industry Conference was held May 23-25, 2013 in Victoria, BC. According to BC Shipping News, in addition to a retrospective of the industry – including presentations from Allan Fowlis (retired, Seaspan) who gave personal insights into the industry in its characters, and Leo Stradiotti (North Arm Transportation) who presented a pictoral of BC tugs from old to new – speakers such as Robert G.Allan (Robert Allan Ltd.), Fred Denning (BC Coast Pilots Ltd.), Malcolm McLaren (Allied Shipbuilders) and Frans Tjallingii (SMIT Marine Canada) each provided a unique perspective on aspects of the industry from technological developments to the relationship to pilots to towage and salvage in the international arena.

Robert Allan Ltd. announced that a long-planned re-structuring of the company has just been completed. Effective July 2008, Robert G. Allan has been appointed as Executive Chairman of the Board and remains at the helm. A core group of senior employees have become shareholders of Robert Allan Ltd., and will become increasingly involved in the company business. Robert Allan Ltd. Reactive by nature, the marine business is perpetually embarked upon the path of transformation, with new rules and regulations handed down from international, national and regional authorities as to how ships and boats should be equipped and operated. Tugz International L.L.C., an affiliate of the 101-year old The Great Lakes Towing Company, and a member of The Great Lakes Group, announced Tuesday that the Broward County (Florida) Board of County Commissioners, by a 6-3 vote, awarded Tugz a tugboat and towing service franchise for Port Everglades, Florida. This action put an end to the 43-year monopoly on tug service in the port previously held by Seabulk International, Inc., formerly known as Hvide Marine, Inc. Since the beginning of the 20th Century when Robert Allan's grandfather emigrated from Scotland to Canada, he treated the concept of naval architecture as a "science" rather than a trade. With little money but a lot of talent, the young man nurtured and grew a family business that would span three generations. From the time he accepted his first job as manager of a Canadian shipyard in 1919, Robert Allan started moving ideas from his head to innovative vessels.
