CMA CGM Invests in Brittany Ferries

CMA CGM Group, a shipping and logistics giant, has agreed to make a €25 million investment, including €10 million in quasi-equity, in Brittany Ferries, the largest ferry company operating under the French flag, to support Brittany Ferries’ post-Covid-19 recovery.Brittany Ferries said the partnership would help to unlock synergies between the two companies in passenger and freight transport. "By harnessing the respective areas of expertise of the CMA CGM Group and Brittany Ferries, it will also help promote the development of cross-Channel shipping and underpin France’s position in the sector.

Interferry: Diverse Operations Common Successes

In October the world’s ferry operators gathered in Split Croatia for the Forty Second Annual Interferry Conference. The 470 or so delegates represented 210 operators and support companies from 27 countries. A trade show included firms from around the world including shipbuilders, naval architects, equipment suppliers, training and others of the diverse group that make up the ferry industry. In a panel on Mediterranean Ferries, Philippe Holthof, of the Belgian-based Shipax explained the huge size and complexity of the fleet.

Volumes Up at Ports of Stockholm

All Ports of Stockholm freight segments increased during the first three quarters of the year in comparison to the same period of 2016. More and more goods are being transported by sea, directly to the growing Stockholm region. Over the first nine months of 2017 freight volumes increased substantially at Ports of Stockholm. This rise can be seen across all segments; ferry freight, containers and bulk cargo. “Freight volumes have increased considerably at all Ports of Stockholm ports. The trend is obvious. The economy is flourishing and Stockholm is growing,” says Johan Castwall, Ports of Stockholm Managing Director. Ports of Stockholm is Sweden’s third largest ferry freight port and it is freight cargo on ferries that has increased most in terms of numbers of tonnes.

Peel Ports Enters 10-year Deal with Volkswagen

Peel Ports Group said it sees the automotive sector as a major growth opportunity and is working continually to provide vehicle manufacturers, logistics companies and shipping lines with world-class facilities and systems. The latest example is Peel Ports Medway’s new partnership with the Volkswagen Group UK Ltd. to build and oversee a new eight-acre Pre Delivery Inspection (PDI) Center at the Port of Sheerness. The investment will create 100 supply chain jobs and increase automobile imports into Sheerness by 50,000 vehicles annually.

Crowley to Acquire New Containers

Crowley Liner Services is investing in and modernizing its equipment fleet by acquiring 1,000 new 53-ft. (102-inch wide) and 1,400 new 45-foot (102-inch wide) container/chassis combinations. The new 45-ft. Bahamas and Virgin Islands. Two hundred and fifty of the 45-foot containers will be equipped with garment racks to accommodate hanging garments in the important apparel markets.
