Bangabandhu Satellite to Link 39,000 Ships at Sea

Bangladesh Communication Satellite Company Limited (BCSCL) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the shipping ministry so that Bangabandhu-1 satellite will provide the connectivity to around 39,000 ships in the country in a year. A report in Star Online quoted Md Saiful Islam, managing director of the government-owned company as saying that  this is the first business promise from the BCSCL, is also engaged negotiations with eight other ministries and divisions to provide them connectivity. It said BCSCL will earn huge amount yearly by providing this service to shipping ministry when after the country’s first communication satellite will starts its commercial activity in September.

Bangladesh Power Cut Plunges Millions into Darkness

Bangladesh was hit on Saturday by a major power outage that brought much of normal life to a standstill, forced hospitals and garment factories to rely on back-up generators and even plunged the prime minister's official residence into darkness. Bangladesh Salvages Capsized Ferry, 54 Bodies Recovered

Rescue workers in Bangladesh completed the search of a stricken river ferry on Saturday, bringing the number of bodies recovered to 54 two days after the vessel capsized with around 200 people on board. "We were able to salvage the capsized ferry today and there are no more bodies inside the wreck," said Saiful Islam Badal, deputy commissioner of Munshiganj district. About 40 people swam to shore and 35 were rescued after the double-decker ferry went down in the Meghna river near the capital Dhaka during a storm on Thursday afternoon, police and rescue officials said. Bangladesh Prepares To Find More Bodies In Capsized Ferry

Rescue workers in Bangladesh expected to find scores of bodies on Saturday trapped between the decks of river ferry that capsized two days earlier with around 200 people on board. About 40 people swam to shore and 35 were rescued after the double-decker ferry went down in the Meghna river near the capital Dhaka during a storm on Thursday, police and rescue officials said. Forty-five bodies have been recovered so far, according to officials in the Munshiganj district, and authorities have given up hope of finding anyone else alive. Western Marine Shipyard to build a passenger-carrying catamaran ferry for the Tanzania Ministry of Transportation. The deal was signed by the Managing Director of Western Marine Shipyard Mr. Sakhawat Hossain and the Director of JGH Marine, Mr. Niels Holstein. Bangladesh Shipbuilding Company Western Marine Shipyard Limited has delivered two more ships to German owners setting a milestone in the country’s shipbuilding industry. The delivery is the fourth pair of ice class ships built by Western Marine for the German buyer Grona Shipping. This project is believed to be the highest in value in Bangladesh shipbuilding industry. “This is the first time that a Bangladeshi shipyard hands over six ships in a row to a single owner,” said Western Marine Chairman Saiful Islam at the handing over ceremony at Chittagong Boat Club, Patenga.
