Austal USA Expands West Coast Repair Operations

Shipbuilder Austal USA said it received approval from the San Diego Port of Commissioners to assume the lease of Marine Group Boat Works in the Port of San Diego. Austal USA and Marine Group Boat Works are entering a 45-day exclusive period to close the agreement.Austal USA will use the 15-acre site to focus on ship repair for U.S. Navy, Military Sealift Command and U.S. Coast Guard ships, establishing a full service ship repair capability providing maintenance and modernization for small surface combatants, autonomous vehicles and other vessels. Greenpeace Stages Pacific Ocean Protest Against Deep-sea Mining

US Navy Awards Repair Work to BAE Systems

BAE Systems today received a $36.7 million contract from the U.S. Navy for the repair and maintenance of the amphibious transport dock ship USS New Orleans (LPD 18). The New Orleans will be the first ship to be repaired in the company’s new drydock in San Diego. The contract includes options that, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value to $51.5 million. BAE Systems will begin work on the 684-foot-long ship in January 2017 and will perform structural and tank repairs, propulsion system repairs and ventilation and auxiliary systems repairs…

Hornblower’s Captain Goben Named “Maritime Person of the Year”

Captain Richard Goben, Port Captain of Hornblower Cruises & Events in San Diego, received an international maritime award at the 87th Annual Convention and Maritime Industry Conference in Arlington, Virginia in October. International Propeller Club of the United States honored Captain Goben as the 2013 Maritime Person of the Year. The Propeller Club was formed in 1927 in order to support shipping and the maritime industry. Captain Goben is a licensed ship Master and has worked in the San Diego cruise industry as the Port Captain for Hornblower Cruises and Events for over 25 years…

Carnival Splenda Pulled into San Diego Port

According to a report from the Associated Press, six tug boats pulled the stricken Carnival Splenda cruise ship to shore Thursday morning, Nov. 11, amid cheers from a waiting crowd, bringing the nearly 4,500 passengers and crew closer to freedom after three days of limited food, smelly toilets and dark cabins (Source: AP)

Knight & Carver YachtCenter Gets 400-ft Drydock

According to a September 21 report from The Log Newspaper, a fleet of tugboats and the San Diego Port Pilots guided a drydock measuring 400 ft in length and 63 ft in height from BAE Ship Systems, through San Diego Bay, and to its new home at Knight & Carver YachtCenter. Port of San Diego Initiates Neighborhood Watch

Prior to the 4th of July, the Coast Guard kicked off its new “Neighborhood Watch” program for San Diego’s port and coastline. San Diego Operation Port Watch enlists the support of San Diego’s citizens, boaters, professional mariners, and waterside business people to be on alert for suspicious activities and help protect the Southern California and the Port of San Diego from potential threats. Operation Port Watch hopes to tap the knowledge of those that work and use the local waters for information on activity that is out of place.
