GSM Tariff Launched for RockFLEET Dual-Mode Vessel Tracking System
Iridium satcom specialist Rock Seven has launched a new fixed monthly GSM tariff for users of its dual-mode vessel tracking system, RockFLEET. The new £10/month subscription covers all vessel tracking and M2M (Machine-to-Machine) data transmitted over GSM networks by the RockFLEET system when operating within GSM coverage. As standard the RockFLEET system provides vessel GPS location reports at user-defined intervals using the global Iridium satellite Short Burst Data (SBD) service, but Rock Seven has seen demand for dual-mode operation using its optional GSM module rise.
Thrane & Thrane to Trade as Cobham SATCOM
Cobham plc has established a new strategic business unit (SBU) Cobham SATCOM: Thrane & Thrane will form its core. Headquartered in Denmark, Cobham SATCOM is led by Thrane & Thrane CEO Walther Thygesen with assistance from a multinational management team, and includes Cobham’s satcom facilities in Cape Town, South Africa, Concord, California and Orlando, Florida. Cobham SATCOM is now twice the size of what either Thrane & Thrane or Cobham’s legacy satcom businesses were prior to this coambination. Rebranding of Thrane & Thrane will begin immediately and is expected to complete during 2013. In addition to adopting the Cobham SATCOM name and Cobham’s brand, the SATCOM SBU will be rebranding its products throughout 2013.
Thales’s JTRS Receives JITC Certification
Thales Communications, Inc., has announced that its AN/PRC-148 Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) Enhanced Multiband Inter/Intra Team Radio (MBITR), or JEM, has received Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC) certification for the Ultra High Frequency (UHF) satellite communications (SATCOM) Integrated Waveform (IW). Thales’s SATCOM IW capability eliminates the need for warfighters to carry their existing heavy, manpack tactical radio systems, and enables each member of the team to deploy with a fully-interoperable, beyond line-of-sight (BLOS) capability. The JITC certification allows users access to SATCOM IW on their fielded AN/PRC-148 JEMs via software upgrade, producing minimal impact on deployed radios and requiring minimal operator intervention.

Thrane & Thrane to Breach Agreement With Nera
Nera ASA has been informed that Thrane & Thrane will not close the agreement relating to the sale of the Nera SatCom AS. Based on this, Nera has considered taking legal action. Nera CEO Bjorn Ove Skjeie said: “Nera’s percetion is that this is regarded as a clear breach of agreement. Skjeie regrets that the planned merger will not be carried through, as this would have been a good industrial solution. Nera SatCom will now continue as a wholly owned Nera Group company.
Transport Canada Selects EMS Satcom
EMS Satcom, a division of EMSTechnologies, Inc. reported that Transport Canada has selected the EMS SATCOM eNfusion Broadband high-speed data system to enhance marine pollution surveillance and detection on Transport Canada's National Aerial Surveillance Program (NASP) Dash 8 aircraft. Flight Acceptance Tests were completed in early November 2006. EMS SATCOM's eNfusion system was installed and integrated with the Swedish Space Corporation's (SSC) Maritime Surveillance System (MSS 6000) to allow for real-time transmission and replay of data. Apax Partners Completes Marlink Acquisition
Funds managed by the private equity firm Apax Partners completed the acquisition of Marlink, Airbus Group’s Commercial Satellite Communication business. Marlink’s maritime and land commercial satcom business is present in 14 countries across Europe, Asia, Middle‐East and Americas, and has a distribution network of approximately 400 resellers worldwide. The company serves all maritime sectors, as well as users in the mining, energy and humanitarian sector. The government satcom business is not part of this transaction and remains part of Airbus Defence & Space’ core activities.
Telenor Satellite Services Awarded Contract
Telenor Satellite Services, a subsidiary of Telenor of Norway has received a General Services Administration (GSA) Federal Technology Service (FTS) contract to provide a wide variety of mobile and fixed satellite communications products and services to the United States government. Under the provisions of the indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract, known as SATCOM-II, government agencies and authorized government contractors can continue to purchase services directly from Telenor Satellite Services. A number Telenor's service partners were also among the companies awarded a GSA FTS SATCOM-II contract.
O'Gara Wins Navy Satellite Deal
SatCom Group Holdings PLC, a reseller of mobile satellite communications, said its subsidiary O'Gara Satellite Systems Inc has won a 5-year contract, worth 10m in the first year, from the US government to supply satellite airtime to the US Navy. O'Gara, which is one of the five companies in the world certified as a Defense Information Technology Contracting Organization (DITCO) awardee, won the contract following a tender. Airbus Group Sheds its Commercial Satellite Communication Business
[Press Release] Airbus Group SE (AIR) signed with French private equity firm, Apax Partners, a share purchase agreement (SPA) for the sale of 100% of the share capital of the legal entities comprising the commercial satellite communication business. The final closing of the transaction – subject to regulatory approvals – is expected to take place in the next months. Airbus Defence and Space announced in September of 2014 that a detailed and comprehensive portfolio assessment had defined Military Aircraft, Space, Missiles and related Systems and Services as its future core businesses.
Cobham, Inmarsat Enable Smart Shipping for Nanjing Tankers
