Port of Kiel Presents Emission-Free Berthing for Ships

The construction of the first onshore power supply plant for commer-cial vessels at the Norwegenkai Terminal in the port of Kiel has begun.Taking part in the official first-cut-of-the-spade-ceremony marking the start of the construction works at the Norwegenkai Terminal were the Economics Minister of the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein, Dr Bernd Buchholz, Kiel’s Lord Mayor Dr Ulf Kämpfer, Port Director Dr Dirk Claus und Color Line GmbH Managing Director Dirk Hundertmark along with Lars Nürnberger, head of Kiel’s Siemens AG branch office.As of spring 2019, it will be possible to supply big cruise ferries with all the electrical power they need during the time they are berthed in Kiel.“We are taking action to make a substantial contribution to air purification”…

Port of Kiel Posts Positive Results for 2014

The Port of Kiel can post positive results for 2014. Both cargo handling and passenger totals continued to rise. The port turned over 6.43 million tons of cargo, 1.6 % more than in the previous year. Stena Line’s Kiel-Gothenburg route recorded the biggest increase in general cargo handling while Color Line’s Kiel-Oslo service posted the strongest growth in passenger transport. During the year a total of 1.98 million passengers started or ended a ferry or cruise ship journey in Kiel - an increase of 1.9 %. Direct Kiel-Duisburg Rail Link to Open

The Port of Kiel is getting an additional direct intermodal train service. From February 3, 2014, a complete block train will operate three times a week in both directions between the Port of Kiel and Duisburg. The trains are 490 meters long which means that 24 slots will be available per departure for loadable trailers or 48 slots for containers and swap-bodies. The train will be operated by Kombiverkehr KG, Frankfurt, which will serve both Kiel’s Schwedenkai Terminal and Ostuferhafen. The travel time from there to the DUSS Terminal in Duisburg-Ruhrort will be about eight hours.

Port of Kiel’s Annual Results Show a Slight Rise

More than 6.3 million tons of cargo and 2.2% more passengers handled. The Port of Kiel ended the year 2012 with a small plus in both cargo and passenger handling. Last year more than 6.3 million tons of cargo (an increase of 0.3%) were turned round for the first time. That was an increase – if only a small one – over handling posted in 2011. In the passenger sector more than 1.9 million travellers either boarded or disembarked from a ferry or cruise ship last year. That was an increase of 2.2% over the previous year.

Kiel Well-Placed for 2012

Port handles more than six million tons for the first time. Kiel, January 17 2012: The Port of Kiel turned round more than six million tons of cargo last year for the first time ever. It posted a turnover figure of 6,293.374 tons exactly at the turn of the year - an increase of 8.5 % over the previous year. The Managing Director of the Port of Kiel (SEEHAFEN KIEL GmbH & Co. KG) Dr Dirk Claus said “thanks to the shipping companies and the port working hand in hand, we have together achieved a top-notch result, won additional shares in the market and gone into 2012 well-placed for the future”.

Kiel Port Opens New Viewing Terrace

The new panoramic viewing terrace at Kiel’s new Schwedenkai Terminal has been officially opened to visitors and the public. Dr Dirk Claus, Managing Director of the Port of Kiel (SEEHAFEN KIEL GmbH & Co. KG) and Peter Todeskino, Kiel Lord Mayor and head of the department of city development and environment, cut a ribbon today on the steps leading to the terrace formally inaugurating the facility. “Here in Kiel we live on and with the Fiord and we want to attract people to the water”, said Peter Todeskino.

Kiel Cargo Handling Rises by More Than 25%

Kiel, May 10th 2011: cargo handling in the Port of Kiel is gaining momentum again. In the first four months of this year about 2.2 million tons were handled, an increase of 25% over the same period of last year. Port of Kiel welcomes “Stena Scandinavica”

Kiel, April 20th, 2011: today’s first call by “Stena Scandinavica” at Kiel’s Schwedenkai Terminal rounds off Stena Line’s new ship generation switch on the Kiel-Gothenburg ferry route. During a reception on board, Kiel Port head Dr Dirk Claus presented the traditional first-call plaque to Captain Jan Sjöström. “We are delighted that as of today the Baltic’s longest and most modern ferries are sailing from Kiel and that all the transport capacity they can offer is now available”, said Dirk Claus, who is the Managing Director of the Port of Kiel (SEEHAFEN KIEL GmbH & Co. Port of Kiel Passenger Totals Rise, Cargo Falls

Port of Kiel (SEEHAFEN KIEL GmbH & Co KG) Managing Director Dirk Claus said: “passenger and cargo traffic developed in different ways last year. We just missed the 5 million ton mark in cargo handling, but at the same time we can look back on the port’s highest passenger totals for ten years. Given the current global economic situation, it’s a good thing that we are so multi-faceted in the Port of Kiel. The number of passengers passing through Kiel last year grew by 12.6 %. “The significance of sea tourism has increased a lot over the past few years and has grown into an important market segment for the Port of Kiel”, said Claus. “Our investment in terminal facilities is now paying off”.
