Alu Design Operator Chair Lands Star Role In 'Transformers: Age of Extinction'

Norway’s Alu Design is set to make its Hollywood debut in the latest Transformers blockbuster, with the news that its MH OCH 300 operator chair has secured a role in Paramount Pictures’ Transformers: Age of Extinction. The seat, created for Aker Solutions in 2012, will now be seen “at the heart” of the film’s set design, starring alongside actors such as Mark Wahlberg, Kesley Grammer and Stanley Tucci. It’s a bewildering development for Kristiansand-based Alu Design, a market leader in the design and manufacture of advanced pilot chairs and deck rails. The firm created the chair to offer new ergonomic and user-friendly standards for operators working in the restricted space of Drillers Cabins on offshore rigs… not for science fiction action films.

Feature: Queen Mary 2 New Technology Melded to the North Atlantic Tradition

Confounding the skeptics who said the 70,300-gt Queen Elizabeth 2 would be the last transatlantic liner ever built, the 150,000-gt Queen Mary 2 is set to make her service debut in January 2004, signifying a $780-million investment in a luxury passenger ship structurally engineered for the North Atlantic. Destined to uphold and revitalize the Cunard liner tradition, the 30-knot QM2 will break new ground in passenger ship technology, while incorporating lessons learned with the 1969-commissioned QE2. The challenge of fulfilling an extremely tough schedule in a notoriously harsh environment, and of meeting rising customer expectations as to service quality, comfort and reliability in all conditions, permeates every aspect of the technical design.

A Manta in Dutch environs

Flat-screen technology can be expected to make its mark on commercial vessel bridges in future years, once the necessary type approvals are forthcoming and once the manufacturers' costs come down on the back of volume demand for flat-panel TV displays in the equivalent size ranges. Kelvin Hughes used the recent Europort Exhibition in Amsterdam to demonstrate how the advantages offered by flat screens might be married with the concept of bridge system multi-functionality on an unprecedented scale in the commercial shipping field. Its revolutionary Manta bridge layout caught many an eye for its styling and array of flat panels. But the thinking behind the good looks and ergonomic design springs from entirely pragmatic considerations.

Plug & Play

Cruise lines, perhaps more than any other segment of the shipping market, have eagerly adopted advanced integrated bridge systems to help protect not only passenger, crews and reputations, but also the more than half-billion dollar homes within which they reside. Furuno's Integrated Bridge System, dubbed Voyager has been designed to achieve total integration of bridge equipment and information in accordance with the One Man Bridge Operation (OMBO). All components come from a single source, Furuno. Complying with the latest performance standards of IMO and IEC, the ECDIS displays and ENC vector charts make for easy route planning and route monitoring.

Bringing Magic to the Cruise Experience — the Role of Technology

"Any sufficiently advanced technology should be indistinguishable from magic" — Arthur C. As we are swept along in the surge of technology that pervades almost every aspect of our lives, we sometimes take for granted the innovations that intervene in our most complex interactions as well as our most mundane. The passenger shipping industry is no exception: from mooring systems to active stabilizers, Internet access and TV broadcasting ability; technology has 'infiltrated' every area. And these days, with virtually none of the processes undertaken by humans being completed without a technological interface of one form or another, technology has asserted itself as a sort of animated inanimate 'man's best friend'.

Bollinger Introduces

The evolution of a new offshore boat design ideally happens with considerable customer input. But in the case of Bollinger Shipyards' new 220-ft. class supply vessel, a fortunate coincidence happen. The first customer for the new vessel, C&G Boats, Golden Meadow, La., and Bollinger independently evolved a vessel with many of the same design features. "When we decided that we needed a new, more capable supply boat, we rejected many conventional designs because they did not have what our customers told us they wanted," said Joey Arceneaux, president of MNM Boats, the operating division of C&G Boats, Golden Meadow, La. Arceneaux said he…
