'World Largest' Offshore Converter Station Debuts in China

The installation on what is reported to be the world’s largest offshore converter station is being hailed by China Classification Society (CCS) as ‘a significant milestone’ in the development of deep-water wind power. CCS provided authentication and survey services for the China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) Rudong offshore converter station, which is also an Asian first.CCS says the facility effectively addresses the challenges of large capacity and long-distance power transmission presented by offshore wind farms.

ZPMC Contracts Royal IHC for J-Lay System

Royal IHC, the supplier of equipment, vessels and services for the offshore and dredging markets, has signed a contract with China’s Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co (ZPMC) to support the installation and commissioning of the J-Lay system on ZPMC’s multipurpose vessel JSD6000 in Changxing, China.The J-Lay system was delivered by IHC in April 2019 after one of the most complex mobilization operations ever seen in the North East of England.As part of this new contract, IHC will be responsible for the design and build of the stinger, the installation and commissioning of the pipelay system, as well as its ongoing preservation and maintenance…

Chinese Shipbuilder Orders TMC Compressors

Chinese  heavy-duty equipment manufacturer Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC) has contracted TMC Compressors of the Seas to supply a marine compressed air system for a new pipelay vessel.TMC will supply a major marine compressed air system consisting of 4 x working air compressors, 4 desiccant air dryers, 2 x instrument air compressors and desiccant air dryers, 4 x starting air compressors, 4 x high pressure compressors for the vessel’s tensioning system, plus 4 x high pressure air dryers. TMC has not disclosed the value of the contract.“As our scope of work suggests, this is a sizeable contract for us, for a large and impressive pipelay vessel.

Broward County’s Port Everglades reports that it is progressing with manufacturing the first three new Super Post-Panamax container-handling gantry cranes being built by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. Inc. (ZPMC) of China. The design phase is nearing completion, and today Port Everglades Chief Executive Steven Cernak issued a second notice to proceed to begin manufacturing the cranes valued at $13.8 million each.“This is a significant step towards the delivery and installation of the first three Super Post-Panamax cranes later next year,” Cernak said.

Chinese Shipbuilder Wins Award for Largest Heavy Lifting Vessel

Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company has built the largest heavy lifting vessel in the world which can carry up to 12,000 tons. The vessel, which took eight years to design and build, was awarded a special prize at the 19th China International Industry Fair in Shanghai. Seen as a symbol of China's growing engineering prowess in ocean technologies, the Zhenhua 30 was previously tested in front of representatives from ABS class society, domestic and international clients and the Chinese and Korean government. In these tests, the single boom crane was able to life 7,700 tons in revolving mode and 13,200 tons when tied back. The vessel has a 12 knot transit speed and can provide accomodation for 380 people.

Port Everglades to Buy Additional Gantry Cranes

Broward County's Port Everglades said it is purchasing three low-profile Super Post Panamax container-handling gantry cranes at $13.8 million each to meet demands from current customers and new services anticipated from the port's multi-million-dollar expansion program. The Broward County Board of County Commissioners approved the $41.4 million crane purchase today, with an option for the seaport to purchase an additional three cranes anytime within five years of placing the order for the first three cranes. "Cargo ships are getting larger and several shipping lines already coming to Port Everglades from Europe and South America need Super Post-Panamax cranes now.

GCT Deltaport is ‘Big Ship Ready’

Following breaking ground on its CAD$280 million GCT Deltaport Intermodal Yard Reconfiguration project in Port Metro Vancouver, GCT Canada has confirmed the order of two high-efficiency “megamax” ship-to-shore (STS) cranes from crane manufacturer Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (ZPMC). Boasting a 23+ container wide outreach, the STS cranes will be capable of handling the largest vessels in service worldwide. Upon commissioning, the state-of-the-art cranes will be among the largest in the Americas, standing over 137 meters high, with a lift capacity of 65 metric tons.

Siemens Power and Drive Systems for New DSV

Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co. Ltd (ZPMC) has commissioned Siemens to equip the latest diving support vessel being built for Toisa Ltd. with complete drive and power systems. According to Siemens, the solution is designed to improve the vessel’s reliability and maneuverability, as well as reduce fuel consumption, so lowering overall operating costs. The integrated drive system (IDS) used in the vessel, with a length of approximately 146 meters, conforms with the international certification standards of DNV GL.

Wartsila to Equip Giant Dredger

A contract has been signed with the Tianjin Dredging Company, part of the China Communication Construction Company (CCCC) and the recently founded Dredging Group, under which Wärtsilä will supply the engines and all essential ancillaries for a new self-propelled cutter dredger. The vessel will be one of the largest and most advanced vessels of its type in the world, and will become CCCC Tianjin's flagship. The ship is being built at the Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries shipyard in China. The contract was signed in June. "We have a strong relationship with Wärtsilä and we are confident that they can provide the technology and support needed to make this project a success," says Mr G.M Liu Chang Yun, Ship New Building Management Department, Tianjin Dredging Company of CCCC.

ZPMC Orders Romica Equipment for DSV

Romica Engineering Ltd (REL) has signed a contract with Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. (ZPMC) to provide a triple drum winch and tooling deployment A-Frame system. This will support the overboard deployment and recovery of diver tools supporting subsea work. The equipment will be fitted on the current diver support vessel in build for Sealion Shipping Ltd, on behalf of Toisa Ltd, this DP3 Multi-Purpose Saturation Diving Support/Offshore Construction Vessel (DSV/OCV) demonstrates Toisa’s continuing commitment to the future of front-rank Saturation Diving/Construction vessels.

Wärtsilä Wins Jack-up Barges Contract

Two new jack-up barges ordered by the National Petroleum Construction Company (NPCC), based in the United Arab Emirates, will feature fully integrated Wärtsilä power generation and electrical and automation (E&A) solutions. The SEP 650 and SEP 750 vessels are being built at the Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC) shipyard in Chang Xing Island, China. The contract with Wärtsilä was signed in December 2014. For each vessel Wärtsilä will supply three 8-cylinder Wärtsilä 20 generating sets, an emergency generating set and the full E&A system.

Barge Master T700 to Be Installed on Boskalis Ndeavor

A Barge Master BM-T700 system was unloaded in Singapore today as it awaits the early 2015 arrival of DP-2 multipurpose vessel Boskalis Ndeavor. According to Barge Master, the T700 will be mobilized on the Ndeavor and continue to the Phillipines where a bridge will be installed between two gas platforms using the Barge Master to compensate the motions of the bridge as a result of the waves. W&O is one of the partners that supported Vigor in the $40m project to build and deliver the largest floating drydock in the U.S. – Vigor Industrial’s Vigorous –  which was delivered recently to its new home in Portland on the Willamette River. W&O provided an actuated valve solution for the ballast system of the drydock, and from design specification through initial commissioning, the W&O team provided technical and product support  for the Vigorous ballast system, a system that uses SPACE Gate Valves, EIM Electric Actuators, reach rods and deck stands.

W&O is one of the partners that supported Vigor in this $40 million dollar project, by providing an actuated valve solution for the ballast system of the drydock. From design specification through initial commissioning, the W&O team has provided technical and product expertise for the Vigorous ballast system, utilizing SPACE Gate Valves, EIM Electric Actuators, reach rods and deck stands.

The Vigorous: Investing in the Future

Vigor Industrial’s new floating drydock, the Vigorous, is headed towards Portland. See our news release for details of arrival. What is the Vigorous? The Vigorous is the largest floating drydock in the United States. The Vigorous will be 300 feet longer and one and a half times the width of Vigor’s largest drydock, with more than three times the lifting capacity. What’s a floating drydock? A floating drydock is a U-shaped marine vessel used to service and build ships. Operators let water into the drydock through valves to submerge it, which allows ships to drive in and out of the drydock.

The drydock, a piece of equipment used to lift vessels as large as cruise ships out of the water, is scheduled to arrive at the mouth of the Columbia Sunday. It will make its way up to Vigor Industrial’s Portland shipyard on the Willamette River by Sunday evening or Monday morning, depending on weather and river traffic. Fully assembled, the drydock will be 960-feet long. However, it is currently in three parts, which are stacked aboard a 738-foot heavy lift ship for delivery.

Kalmar's Proposal Received a Commendation Award

Kalmar's proposal for the Next Generation Container Port Challenge was prepared in close cooperation with Singapore Nanyang Technological University, APL Co Ltd, Fraunhofer IDM@NTU and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.

Cargotec's Kalmar,  as part of a consortium, received a commendation award of $100,000 (USD)  in the Next Generation Container Port (NGCP) Challenge at the Singapore International Maritime Awards on April 11. The NGCP Challenge sought to identify innovative ideas on how to plan, design and operate the next generation of container ports that exemplify performance, productivity and sustainability. Kalmar's proposal was prepared in close cooperation with Singapore Nanyang Technological University, APL Co Ltd, Fraunhofer IDM@NTU and VTT Technical Research Center of Finland.

New Middle East Container Terminal Crane Orders

DP World orders cranes for its new Jebel Ali container terminal from international and local suppliers. DP World, UAE Region signs agreements with local and international companies for the supply of 19 Ship To Shore (STS) quay cranes and 50 Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes for its 4 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) capacity Terminal 3 development at the flagship Jebel Ali Port. The new container terminal will be 1,860 metres long, with a depth of 17 metres to handle multiple next generation container liners simultaneously, and a 70 hectare yard.

$43 Million Contract Awarded Of New Backhoe Dredge

PANAMA CITY, Panama, April 27, 2011 - The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has awarded a $43 million contract to Dutch company IHC Engineering Business Ltd., a part of IHC Merwede Group, for the design and construction of a new backhoe dredge. The addition of this new dredge to the ACP’s existing fleet in December 2012 will increase the ACP’s ability to effectively dredge as part of the Expansion Program and future maintenance projects. IHC Engineering Business Ltd. will be responsible for the design, construction, tests and delivery of the hydraulic backhoe dredge.
