The Great Lakes Towing Company and Great Lakes Shipyard have announced plans to hire 100 employees before the end of January 2018 to support continued growth driven by client demand. The company said it is seeking candidates to fill a wide range of positions, including shipyard welders, shipfitters and more. “At The Towing Company, we’re looking for great people to join our team,” said Joe Starck, the company’s president. Located in Cleveland, Ohio, The Towing Company is the owner and operator of the largest fleet of shipdocking tugboats on the U.S. Great Lakes-Saint Lawrence River Seaway.

Notwithstanding the lingering offshore energy downturn, there were plenty of bright spots for North American shipyards in 2017. If a hull was delivered in 2017, we took a look at it, with several areas as a focus for inclusion into this edition. For starters, it is always exciting when a domestic yard delivers a vessel – or multiple vessels, for that matter – to foreign buyers. We can compete in a foreign arena; on price, quality and on-time delivery. This year was no different. No less important is the environmental footprint of a vessel, and there was plenty to report on from that angle in the past 12 months. The domestic waterfront is indeed getting greener and cleaner.

Horizon Shipbuilding, Inc. of Bayou La Batre, Ala. said it has reached milestone in its contract with McAllister Towing. The Capt. Brian A. McAllister, the first of up to four hulls, has been flipped and set on the shipbuilding ways. A considerable amount of work was performed while the hull was upside down including installation of all major pipe runs and manifolds, fabrication and installation of the cable trays and bulkhead penetrations and fender installation, the builder said. With the hull set, Horizon will be able to set the prefabricated and outfitted superstructure.

Denmark's Svitzer, the world's biggest tugboat operator, said on Monday it has established a harbour towage service in the Port of Montreal providing shipdocking, escort and ice-breaking services. Svitzer, a unit in shipping and oil group A.P. Moller-Maersk , said in a statement it has mobilized two ice-class tugs to the port and a third tug will arrive in mid-April. "Canada is one of our key growth markets in the Americas," the company added. Svitzer reshuffled its organisation in August in a bet to speed up growth in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. The Great Lakes Towing Company, which operates the largest fleet of shipdocking tugboats on the U.S. Great Lakes-Saint Lawrence Seaway, has announced the addition of four more tugboats to its fleet. The four newly purchased tugs will be named after four of the Great Lakes; Tug Michigan, Tug Huron, Tug Ontario and Tug Erie. The American Waterways Operators, the national trade association representing the U.S. tugboat, towboat and barge industry, announced today that it has launched a new website designed to increase public awareness and foster greater knowledge of the industry’s key contributions in the areas of safety and the environment, security and the economy. “AWO and its members are very proud of our role in moving the nation’s commerce safely and efficiently, and we want others to know more about this very dynamic industry,” said Tom Allegretti, AWO’s President & CEO.

In August the RAmparts 2500W tug Norvegia was delivered by Astilleros Armon of Navia, Spain to owners, Rimorchiatori Riuniti in Genoa, Italy. Shortly afterward in early September, the second vessel of Rimorchiatori Riuniti's two boat order, the Spagna, was delivered. The RAmparts 2500W is a new variation on Robert Allan Ltd's standard RAmparts 2500 design. It was developed in collaboration with Rimorchiatori Riuniti who were looking for a compact, yet powerful shipdocking tug for their operations in the historic and busy port of Genoa.

On Wednesday 18 March 2009, SMIT entered into an agreement to acquire all shares of Minette Bay Ship Docking Ltd in Prince Rupert, Canada. Minette Bay is active in the port of Prince Rupert with three ASD tugs. Minette Bay performed the shipdocking services for Ridley Island Coal Terminal for 25 years. This acquisition enhances SMIT Marine Canada’s current harbour towage operations on the West Coast of Canada. The acquisition is still subject to approval of authorities under the Investment Canada Act.

Boatsense Solutions, Inc. announced that it recently installed its wireless remote vessel monitoring system on several Moran Towing Corporation’s tugboats. Moran maintains three major lines of business: shipdocking, contract towing and marine transportation. Approaching its 150th anniversary, Moran operates in 16 ports with a fleet of tugs and barges. From the sight of it, which was far from symmetrical, it might have appeared a precarious balancing act.

It was the late 1970s and El Paso Energy ran a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal known as Cove Point in the heart of the Chesapeake Bay — midway between the East Coast ports of Baltimore, Md. and Hampton Roads, Va. As the demand for gas waned, the terminal ceased operations after only two years, and it sat dormant for nearly two decades. Today the market for LNG is rising fast, with positive ripple effects being felt across the maritime niche.
