At an award ceremony in Singapore this week, 60 MaritimeONE Scholarships and seven Tripartite Maritime Scholarships (TMSS) were presented, sponsored by 34 partners from industry, foundations, and unions.The number surpassed last year’s award of 54 scholarships by 27 partners. More companies have come onboard to support MaritimeONE Scholarships in recent years, reflecting the focus on talent development by Maritime Singapore. In conjunction with the ‘Day of Seafarer 2018’, Jurong Port (JP), the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), Port of Singapore Authority (PSA), the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU), and the Singapore Organisation of Seamen (SOS) will jointly present 600 gift hampers to ships calling at Singapore. The hampers, containing essential daily items, will reach about 9,000 seafarers as an appreciation for their contributions to the maritime industry and global economy. MPA also contributes a sum of $150,000 annually to support the work of various seafarers’ missions to look out for seafarers’ welfare when they call at our shores.

Singapore has launched an initiative to attract more locals to take up a career as a marine engineer. The joint venture between unions, government and industry aims to address an acute shortage. A new S$1.2 million Tripartite Engineering Training Award (TETA) Programme was launched by Lim Swee Say, the Minister for Manpower. A total of 51 scholarships worth more than S$1.4 million were awarded this year, as part of continuous outreach and talent development efforts to meet the manpower needs of the growing Singapore maritime industry - an area which contributes to some 7 per cent of the nation's economy. Sponsored by maritime companies and organisations, the MaritimeONE (Maritime Outreach NEtwork) scholarships and Tripartite Maritime Scholarship Scheme (TMSS) support various local and overseas diploma and degree programmes. Wavelink Maritime Institute has launched a new maritime simulation center in May powered by Transas simulators. The Wavelink Maritime Simulation Center is a training arm of the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU) and one of the first few maritime institutes in Singapore to house four different types of simulators in one location. Today, the International Labor Organization’s (ILO) Maritime Labor Convention, 2006, (MLC, 2006) will enter into force in the first 30 States to ratify the Convention, with other ILO Member States scheduled to bring it into force over the next 12 months. The MLC, 2006 is an important international regulatory instrument that will provide protection at work for more than 1.5 million seafarers who serve on the world’s fleets.
