North American ECA – Today

On August 1, 2012, the North American Emissions Control Area (NAECA) took effect, mandating the use of 1.0% sulfur Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) or residual fuel oil for ships within 200 miles of the continent of North America. California has mandated the use of distillate fuel when ships are within 24 miles of its coastline since July 1, 2009. Lessons learned from California’s experience with distillate fuels may benefit operators as the next phase of NAECA comes into effect (January 1…

Chief Engineer Sentenced for Falsifying Records

Dimitrios Dimitrakis, Chief Engineer of the cargo ship M/V New Fortune, was sentenced in federal court in Oakland today to three years probation, a $5,000 fine, and a $100 special assessment for failing to maintain an Oil Record Book, a document required by MARPOL, a treaty ratified and implemented by the United States, United States Attorney Melinda Haag announced. This sentence stems from the overboard disposal of oil residue, sludge, oil, and oily mixtures into the ocean and Dimitrakis’s subsequent efforts to conceal these discharges by falsifying onboard records. According to Court documents, the M/V New Fortune is a ocean-going bulk cargo ship registered in the Marshall Islands that carried bulk products in world-wide commerce.

Technology

PyroGenisis' Compact Plasma Waste Elimination System is positioned as the most space-conscious solution for onboard ships, and in Miami at Cruise Shipping the company was touting its installation onboard Carnival Cruise Lines M/S Fantasy since October 2003. The system occupies a surface of only 700 sq. ft. and is located on a single deck of the ship, and is capable of treating a variety of waste generated onboard, including cardboard, food, food contaminated waste (USDA), plastics and cabin waste. Sludge oil can also be treated by the system. PyroGenesis is in negotiation with Carnival for additional installations. The technology was developed the technology under contract to the US Navy, and is just now making its commercial maritime debut.

Marine Propulsion:Emission-Reduction Test a Success

New emission reduction technology was recently proven in a joint test with Holland America and RINA. The test was conducted aboard Veendam. Pictured is sistership Zaandam. Reduced emissions from diesel engines at sea has become a rallying cry from legislators to ship owners to diesel engine manufacturers to fuel and additive suppliers. Last month a significant milestone in the fight to reduce emissions was achieved, as emission-reduction technology reportedly been tested successfully on Carnival's Holland America (HAL) ship, Veendam. The tests were carried out jointly by Carnival Corporate Shipbuilding, HAL and RINA within a common R&D project. The technology is based on injecting water into fuel to create micro-droplets of emulsified fuel.

M/S Zuiderdam: Modern With Elegant Taste

Taking a moment to think back to when Holland America Line (HAL) first announced the formulation of the new Vista Class at the Sea Trade Cruise Shipping Show in Miami, Fla. in March 2001, it is almost as though we are living in a different world. The cruise industry was booming, there was no such thing, as the Office of Homeland Security and the threats of terrorism seemed only real in distant lands. One thing is the same, however, and that is that despite all these obstacles — both financial and political — HAL stood its ground to work with Fincantieri to build a vessel class like no other - both on the technical and design fronts. MR/EN had the opportunity to explore the premiere vessel of this class — MS Zuiderdam —inside and out during its preview cruise this past December.

Royal Caribbean Commits To Environmental Endeavors

Today's era of stringent environmental policy marvelates that cruise lines must work to achieve good environmental practice. The marine industry in general, the cruise market in particular, have continually worked to project the image of environmental friend. However through high profile cases of negligence and/or abuse, significant new layers of rules and regulations are entering force to ensure shipping companies are truly committed to protecting the valuable environment within which they operation. Royal Caribbean (RCCL) — following a year in which it was levied record fines of $18 million for its poor environmental practices — has since established a compliance program called Above and Beyond Compliance (ABC) — in addition to its environmentally-sound Save The Waves Program.
