UK Royal Navy Contracts SEA for Sonar Support

(Photo: SEA/USASS)

Cohort plc company SEA won a contract by the UK Ministry of Defense (UK MoD) to provide support to a range of UK Royal Navy acoustic and sonar underwater systems fitted to the surface and sub-surface fleets. The two year deal to deliver the MoD Underwater Systems Architecture Advisory Service (USAAS) combines all Maritime Combat System Underwater Electronic Warfare (MCS-UEW) sonar support and advice requirements within a single program for the first time. It is valued at around $1.27 million and will task SEA with providing advice and support for the Sonar 2150…

Thales Secures Contract from UK Navy

Thales has signed a five-year contract with the U.K.’s Ministry of Defence to provide support for the Sonar 2050 antisubmarine sensor used on the Royal Navy’s Type 23 frigate fleet. Sonar 2050 is a medium-range bow sonar currently fitted to 13 Type 23 frigates and is the Royal Navy’s primary hull-mounted antisubmarine warfare sensor. It also provides the ship with passive detection capabilities at lower frequencies. Under the contract, Thales will provide physical support of Sonar 2050 for operational defect rectifications, a worldwide 24/7 helpdesk support service, drydock and afloat support, and test equipment and handling. Thales was awarded the contract in a competitive process by offering a value for money…

Eighth and Final Royal Navy Frigate Upgraded with Sonar 2087

Following an extensive refit, HMS Portland has become the final Royal Navy Type 23 frigate to be fitted with Thales U.K.’s Sonar 2087, a towed array sonar system that enables warships to hunt submarines at considerable distances and locate them beyond the range from which they can launch an attack. Portland has now returned to service, with a rededication ceremony on March 21. The 12-month multi-million pound refit in Rosyth Royal Dockyard of Portland’s sensors, weapons and systems…

Thales Sonar as “The Most Potent of Any Navy”

HMS Northumberland

The Royal Navy has described how the combination of a Type 23 frigate fitted with Thales UK’s Sonar 2087 and a Merlin helicopter equipped with the Thales FLASH dipping sonar has delivered an outstanding anti-submarine warfare capability. HMS Northumberland, sailing as part of the UK’s Response Force Task Group on the Cougar 12 Mediterranean deployment, recently conducted advanced anti-submarine warfare (ASW) training with a friendly submarine. The exercise involved the ASW surface ships trying to ‘sink’ the hunter-killer submarines…

One of the Royal Navy’s (RN’s) most advanced Type 23 frigates has re-entered operational service, fitted with Thales’s Sonar 2087 system, following a period of sea trials. HMS Sutherland has been declared fit for operational service after trials of its major sonar and defensive systems, and now becomes the sixth Type 23 frigate to be upgraded with the Sonar 2087 system. In November 2008 the Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced that HMS Sutherland had left Rosyth dockland for the trials after a multi-million pound refit that included major upgrades to its sonar…

Royal Navy Gets Sub Detection System

The Royal Navy has taken delivery of a new naval sonar system five months ahead of schedule. The Sonar 2087 is a defense capability needed by the Royal Navy in order to detect a new generation of increasingly stealthy submarines which often operate close to shore - making them very hard to detect. Ordered in 2001, the system was due to enter service in May 2006. The Sonar operates at a lower frequency (longer wavelength) to enable the detection of a hostile submarine at longer range - enabling the ship's captain to take action before the enemy submarine gets within torpedo range.
