FarSounder Receives 8th Patent

FarSounder expanded its IP portfolio with the issuance of its 8th Patent, number 11,609,316. This US patent expands the company’s patent portfolio for its unique sonar system and its 3D processing.The invention provides a sonar system that includes a forward-looking sonar device that operates in an integrated fashion with one or more other sonar devices so that a boater can have a reliable navigation tool. The forward looking sonar can include a transducer array that takes a three-dimensional acoustic reading of the objects and seafloor ahead. Tropical Storm Kate Halts El Faro Salvage Operation

Salvage operations for the sunken cargo ship El Faro were suspended on Friday due to Tropical Storm Kate, which moved through the Bahamas with winds of 45 miles (75 km) per hour, U.S. authorities said. The El Faro sank off the southern Bahamas in a hurricane last month with the loss of 33 mostly American crew. Its wreck was located on the seafloor in 15,000 feet (4,500 meters) of water a little over a week ago. A U.S. Navy salvage tug, Apache, is searching for the ship's bridge and voyage data recorder, which became separated from the wreck, the U.S.

Hi-tech Goggles Help Divers Locate Sandy-downed Structures

During an intense two-day period, Coast Guard diving teams recover downed light towers from East Rockaway Inlet and Jones Beach Inlet. Both lights were destroyed during Hurricane Sandy. The divers used the Dual-Frequency Identification Sonar Diver Held unit, a handheld sonar device connected to a pair of goggles that attach to the diver’s face mask. The unit produces a 3D image with a range of up to 100 feet underwater in zero visibility conditions. This unit increased efficiency and productivity by using less time and manpower while performing this search and recovery mission.

USN: Two Civilians At Control Stations On Sub

Two civilians were at control stations on the USS Greeneville as the submarine shot to the surface and struck a Japanese fishing vessel, a U.S. Navy spokesman in Honolulu said on Tuesday. Commander Bruce Cole said the two were allowed to participate at the control positions and were among 16 civilians invited aboard the U.S. submarine for a brief training cruise last week. Earlier a Pentagon official, who asked not to be identified, had said a civilian was under careful supervision at the time of the accident and that the move was not highly unusual and apparently had no influence on the collision.
