Long Beach Port Launches Zero-Emissions Project
Officials from the Port of Long Beach, Southern California Edison and the California Energy Commission today launched the nation’s largest pilot project for zero-emissions cranes and other cargo-handling equipment for seaports. Funded mostly by a $9.7 million grant from the California Energy Commission, the project will bring 25 vehicles that are zero- or near zero-emissions to Port of Long Beach marine terminals for one year to test their performance in a real-world setting. The launch event was held at Pacific Container Terminal at Long Beach’s Pier J — operated by SSA Terminals — one of three terminals participating in the project.
Two Long Beach Port Funded Projects Opened
In a festive ceremony, two Port of Long Beach grant-funded environmental projects had their grand openings yesterday, at the Century Villages of Cabrillo homeless rehabilitation complex in West Long Beach. Century Villages at Cabrillo was awarded grants under the Port’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Grant Program. First Vessel 'Plugs In' to New Hueneme Power System
The Port commissioned the Hamburg Sud’s M/V Cap Palmerston, carrying fresh fruit for Chiquita Brands of Charlotte, North Carolina during a ribbon cutting ceremony to introduce the Port of Hueneme’s recently installed Grid-Based Shore Power system. Community leaders were on hand to view this first vessel ‘plug in’. The initial test of ‘plugging in’ a vessel is critical to assessing the performance of this new and very high voltage shore power system. It is also vital to ensuring all trained units including ILWU and ship operators become comfortable with operating the gear.
Electric Rates Reduced at Port of Long Beach
The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) approved reduced electric rates at the Port of Long Beach for the next 24 years and a program for Southern California Edison to install major electric infrastructure at no cost to the port or its tenants, so that the Port and its tenants can proceed with critical electrification and environmental improvement projects. NAVFAC Begins Installation Process of Wind Turbine

Installation of the Marine Corps' first large scale wind turbine at Marine Corps Logistics Base (MCLB) Barstow began Jan. 8, with a kick-off meeting between Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest, MCLB, and Southern California Edison (SCE). The meeting starts the official implementation of the first of its kind contract awarded to the Marine Corps in November 2007. "The purchase of this wind turbine will allow MCLB Barstow to meet energy conservation and savings requirements established by various federal laws, regulations and directives," said Monica Hernandez, NAVFAC Southwest contract specialist for Special Ventures Acquisition Utilities and Energy Contracting.
