FPSO Trio Receives Side Shell Protection

Steel top plates welded to ship to form cavity into which elastomer core will be injected

SPS Overlay has yet again been used for side impact protection on three FPSOs for a major player in the offshore industry. The work was carried out at Enseada do Paraguaçu S.A. Shipyards (EEP) in Brazil and COSCO (Dalian) Shipyard, China. These projects were undertaken during the course of 2014, with the final project being completed in December 2014. A total 2,824m² of SPS Overlay has been installed on the three vessels. Intelligent Engineering (IE) sought approval from the three vessels’ Class Society…

Fuel Tank Thermal Insulation Introduced

SPS Overlay has been used on three tankers to provide thermal insulation boundaries between two Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) tanks to successfully convert one of them into a Marine Gas Oil (MGO) tank. This was the first time that SPS Overlay has been used in this application; and was approved by Lloyds Register (LR). Carried out at Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar by Intelligent Engineering’s partner, Clarkson Technical Services Offshore Marine (CTSOM), on behalf a global shipping company, each of the three ships had areas of 50m² of SPS Overlay fitted to bulkheads between two adjacent fuel tanks. This SPS Overlay modification delivers an effective thermal insulation boundary between HFO and MGO tanks…

SPS Overlay Reduces Impacts Offshore

SPS Overlay has recently been used to reinstate the starboard box girder walkway on the Northern Producer. This Aker H-3 Semi Submersible type Floating Production Facility is operated by Petrofac Facilities Management. The project was executed in South Shields, UK by McNulty Offshore Construction with support from SPS Overlay specialist. Greig Ritchie, Petrofac Facilities Management confirmed that SPS Overlay is an easy and fast method for reinstating steel to as-built condition with minimum disruption when he said: “For our application a conventional crop and replace repair would not have been possible due to knock-on implications. The ongoing demand for energy has led to a boom in the offshore oil and gas industry.

Premuda Returns for SPS Overlay

Premuda, has returned for more SPS Overlay steel reinstatement, this time on board one of its Panamax bulk carriers, the 1984-built Four Earth. The 78,000 dwt vessel, classed by Lloyd’s Register, was repaired at Cosco Guangdong Shipyard in , formerly known as Cosco Guangzhou. The project on board the Four Earth involved tank top reinstatement and some repairs to lower areas of bulkhead stools covering a total area of 2,876m². The shipyard’s own personnel carried out the preparatory steelwork, involving the blasting and cleaning of existing tank top plate, and the welding of perimeter bars and new top plate to create cavities. Stena Continues Ferry Upgrades with SPS Overlay

This repair to the Stena Transfer is the seventh SPS Overlay project completed for Stena Line since 2002. Over 650m of the Stena Transfer’s main deck, tweendeck and shelter deck were reinstated using SPS Overlay.  Unlike disruptive ‘crop and replace’ techniques, SPS Overlay is non-intrusive, the existing structure remained intact and the insulation, piping and services untouched. This contributed to significant schedule savings and to getting the Stena Transfer back in service quickly.

Repair Technology: SPS Overlay: Fix Steel Decks Faster

Despite the quality of protection and commitment to maintenance, a certainty in the marine business is that metal structures eventually corrode and wear. Whether it is 25 months or 25 years, most all marine structures will enter a shipyard for some quantity of steel renewal throughout its life. While the process of removing and replacing steel, particularly decks, is at best a manual and laborious process, Intelligent Engineering (IE) is touting its innovative SPS Overlay structural re-instatement process as a means to help shipowners and ship repairers to save valuable time and money. What is SPS? SPS, invented by IE in association with BASF, is a patented system whereby two metal plates are bonded to a solid elastomer core.

IE Profits from Offshore Focus

As Intelligent Engineering (IE) prepares to carry out another drilling rig repair using its SPS Overlay technology in the reinstatement of the pipe-rack deck on board the Pride South Atlantic, a semi-submersible unit belonging to Pride International, the company's recent focus on the offshore sector is clearly paying dividends.
