Texas Yard Scraps Its First EU-flagged Ship

EMR Group said its International Shipbreaking Ltd (ISL) site in Brownsville, Texas is the first to accept a EU ship to be recycled in the U.S.Using sustainable recycling processes, ISL was able to recycle 97% of the materials removed from MT Wolverine, a 158-meter-long chemical tanker with a carrying capacity of 16,000 tonnes, which prior to being decommissioned, was sailing under the flag of Norway.The project follows a $30 million investment in new equipment and processes at ISL’s Brownsville yard, to meet the requirements of the EU Ship Recycling Regulation (EU SSR).

Texas Yard is US' First EU-compliant Shipbreaking Site

International Shipbreaking said it has become the first yard in the U.S. to gain EU Ship Recycling Regulation (EU SSR) accreditation, after investing $30 million in compliant infrastructure.The Brownsville, Texas site, part of EMR Metal Recycling, can now help EU-based ship owners—as well as ships flying the flags of EU member states—to responsibly recycle their ships at end of life.The regulations set standards for environmental and health and safety compliance which go above and beyond stringent U.S. regulatory requirements.

In May 2014 National Geographic wrote an in-depth article on shipbreaking operations in Bangladesh where they listed shipbreaking as one of the deadliest professions in the world. The images from these shipyards are well circulated among professionals in the shipping industry. Individuals without personal protective equipment cutting and grinding into a ship that was haphazardly beached and torn asunder by unskilled laborers. Pollution swirl in the nearby tidal area and soot belches into the air. Large sections of ships come careening off endless rows of vessels that litter the beach.

Passing out Parade at INS Chilka

A parade marked the culmination of 21 weeks of basic training and a total of 1640 trainees passed out successfully from the portals of INS Chilka on 13 Jan 17. These trainees will now proceed for cadre specific professional training, both, at sea and professional training schools of the Indian Navy. The parade was reviewed by Admiral Sunil Lanba, PVSM, VSM, ADC, the Chief of the Naval Staff. The Admiral in his address to the passing out trainees emphasized that “it is incumbent upon the trainees to serve the navy with honour, dignity and commitment. He reiterated that no effort would be too small and no sacrifice too great in serving our glorious nation and splendid service”. Vice Admiral AR Karve, AVSM, FOC-in-C south was the conducting officer for the parade.

Keeping a Watchful Eye

In 2014, Forbes Associate Director for Maritime Services at Control Risks stated that maritime risks are on the rise. Mariners and ship owner/operators experienced a 26% spike in maritime piracy and armed robbery since 2014  and the North Sea Oil Industry admitted that it had been targeted and thwarted cyber attacks, attacks that if successful could have caused untold financial and logistical damage. •    Within the last decade, plans to attack a cruise ship in a major U.S. port were revealed. Maritime surveillance systems play a key role monitoring sea lanes and ports while supporting worldwide maritime safety and security. The ability to operate effectively and securely in any environment (air, land or sea) depends on an acute awareness and understanding of the surrounding elements.

Beaching Ban Bad for Ship Recycling Industry

On Monday 20th of April 2015, Michael Grey of Lloyds List published the article "Name-calling bullies" where he outlined his opposition to the idea of banning beaching and gave reasons why such a decision would be impractical and unethical for the ship recycling industry. In fact, throughout his article he stressed the improvements of safety and environmental standards which have taken place in facilities in the Indian subcontinent and highlighted the fact that these improvements had been witnessed during a fact-finding visit to Alang, India, by a delegation of Japanese industry and government officials organised by GMS. Godfrey has a solid background in the Maritime industry including Planning and Project Management as well as sales. In recent years, Godfrey’s sales experience has focused on foreign and domestic blue water market. He is a 1986 graduate of the State University of New York Maritime College.

Signal Wins USACE Dredge Repair Contract

Signal Ship Repair Wins Bid to Repair U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Hopper Dredge WHEELER. Signal Ship Repair (SSR), a division of Signal International, Inc., competitively bid and won a contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to repair and repower the Hopper Dredge WHEELER. SSR will provide engineering and marine services to perform engine replacement, auxiliary systems modifications, repair work, and testing of the Dredge WHEELER for the Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District. The eleven-month project will commence in February with phase one pre-planning, engineering, and scheduling portion. The second phase begins in July with the Dredge WHEELER on the SSR drydock for capital improvements…

Signal International Completes Mobile Yard Renovations

Signal International Inc. recently completed a $9m yard and drydock renovation on its ship repair facility in Mobile, Alabama. Signal Ship Repair (SSR), the company’s most recent acquisition, is the flagship vessel repair and new construction division for ships, workboats, and tugs in the Signal family of yards. The facility upgrade project was completed ahead of schedule and ready for the Transocean Deepwater Navigator. The drillship has been at Signal’s Pascagoula yard for repairs and recently arrived at SSR’s Panamax drydock…

Signal Wins Transocean Drillship Project

Signal International, Inc. announced it has been awarded a contract from Transocean UK Limited, to refurbish and upgrade the Deepwater Navigator drillship. The initial contract is valued at $32.4m. The work is slated to be performed at Signal’s shipyards in Pascagoula, Miss. and Mobile, Ala. The drillship will arrive the second week in October at Signal’s East Bank shipyard in Pascagoula where an extensive list of repairs and upgrades will be performed. Major items include living quarters enhancements and refurbishment; the fabrication and installation of a new helicopter deck; high and low pressure pipe system replacement; major equipment removals and repair, ventilation system enhancements, and the upgrade of electrical power, communication and control systems.

Signal Acquires Bender Shipbuilding

Signal International Inc. announced the purchase of the Bender Shipbuilding & Repair assets through a bankruptcy auction. Signal was the winning bidder of the Mobile, Ala. shipyard for $31.2m which is contingent upon approval by the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Alabama. “This purchase is consistent with diversifying the company while continuing the focus on our core competency in the overhaul, repair and upgrade of offshore drilling rigs,” said Dick Marler, Signal’s president and chief executive officer. According to  Marler, Signal plans to make an additional investment of about $5m on upgrades and repairs, and  increase employment to 400 to 500 within 18 months.

Detyens Concludes Largest U.S. Conversion

In May Detyens Shipyard concluded the reactivation and conversion of the LNG carrier Galleoma (formerly Arzew), finishing what the yard termed the largest commercial reactivation and conversion in the U.S. this year. Located in Charleston, S.C., Detyens work on the technically challenging project helped to establish it as a competitive player on the world commercial ship repair market, and helped to re-enforce the notion that the LNG market in the U.S. is set for rapid expansion. "To be successful in the competitive world of ship repair we knew that we would have to start with small commercial repair jobs and work our way up to the larger, more complex jobs," said Loy Stewart, president, Detyens Shipyard.
