Containership Rescues Man Clinging to Capsized Boat
A containership rescued a boater clinging to the hull of his capsized vessel approximately 86 miles east of Port Canaveral, Fla., Sunday.Stuart Bee departed Cape Marina in Port Canaveral on Friday and was reported missing Saturday after he did not return from his day trip. This Day in U.S. Coast Guard History – January 28
1885-Keeper Marcus Hanna of the Cape Elizabeth Light Station saved two men from the wrecked schooner Australia. For this rescue Hanna was awarded the Gold Lifesaving Medal. He was also awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at Port Hudson in 1863. He is the only person to have ever received both awards. 1915- President Woodrow Wilson signed into law the "Act to Create the Coast Guard," an act passed by Congress on 20 January 1915 that combined the Life-Saving Service and Revenue Cutter Service to form the Coast Guard (38 Stat. L., 800). The Coast Guard, however, still considers the date of the founding of the Revenue Cutter Service, 4 August 1790, as its "official" birthday, even though the Lighthouse Service, absorbed in 1939, is even older than that, dating to 7 August 1789.
This Day in Coast Guard History – August 20
1898-The American schooner, Rouse Simmons had her cargo shift to starboard, giving her a heavy list and forcing her covering board up so she leaked badly. She was sighted by the station lookout coming around the SE point of North Manitou Island. The surfboat was launched and pulled out to her. She had 4 feet of water in her hold, and was leaking too fast for her crew to keep her afloat much longer. She was anchored on the advise of the keeper and the station crew rigged out her booms to port. The pumps were then manned by all hands, spouts rigged to discharge the water overboard, and after 4 hours of work she was freed and on an even keel. 1984-A fire broke out in a stateroom aboard the 506-foot cruise ship Scandanavian Sea while the vessel was five miles off the Florida coast.

Vessel Runs Aground, Pulled Free
A 590-ft. cargo ship that ran aground has been pulled to deeper water and is being held offshore of Port Canaveral until it is safe to enter port. The Shenandoah Highway, a cargo ship carrying automobiles, left the Southampton, United Kingdom, and attempted to enter Port Canaveral. A few minutes later the ship ran aground. Coast Guard inspectors from Marine Safety Detachment Port Canaveral boarded tugs and a small boat crew from Station Port Canaveral to assess the situation.
