Fowler Assumes Command of U.S. Naval Academy

Vice Adm. Jeffrey L. Fowler relieved Vice Adm. Rodney P. Rempt as Superintendent of the United States Naval Academy during a change of command ceremony held in Alumni Hall on June 8. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Mullen praised Rempt’s accomplishments during his four years at the Naval Academy, commending his focus on developing midshipmen as combat leaders of character. “As a Naval Academy grad, I want to thank you for all that you have done for my alma mater, the naval services, and the nation,” Mullen said. Rempt, a surface warfare officer and a 1966 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, became the 59th superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy in August 2003. “I am eternally indebted to the finest faculty in the country,” said Rempt.

U.S. Participates In NATO Exercise Noble Manta

Sailors from USS Augusta (SSN 710), USS The Sullivans (DDG 68) and aviators from Patrol Squadron (VP) 5 are participating in a National Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)-led exercise Noble Manta from April 12-22. The largest joint anti-submarine warfare exercise held annually in the Mediterranean Sea, Noble Manta 2007 involves 10 NATO countries which provide maritime patrol aircraft, surface and subsurface assets. The exercise is in direct support of a Naval Forces Europe/6th Fleet strategic priority of improving maritime security. “This exercise is important because it allows the U.S. and allied partner nations to improve regional maritime security and safety,” said Rear Adm. Jeff Fowler, Commander Submarines, Allied Naval Forces South.

SECDEF Announces Flag Officer Assignments

Secretary of Defense Robert M. Navy Rear Adm. Jeffrey L. Fowler has been nominated for appointment to the grade of vice admiral and assignment as superintendent, U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md. Fowler is currently serving as director, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Sixth Fleet, plans and operations/deputy commander, Sixth Fleet/commander Submarines, Allied Naval Forces South/commander, Submarine Group Eight/CTF 69/CTF 164, Naples, Italy. Navy Rear Adm. Samuel J. Locklear III has been nominated for appointment to the grade of vice admiral and assignment as commander, Third Fleet, San Diego, Calif. Locklear is currently serving as director, programming division, N80, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Pentagon, Washington, D.C. Navy Rear Adm. Anthony L.
