With a combined 843 years without an incident, 74 Foss Maritime and subsidiary companies' tugs and tank barges have been recognized by a major maritime organization for their environmental records. The Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) announced the 2016Environmental Achievement Awards honoring the Seattle-based company's work on Nov.2, 2016, in Washington, D.C. Foss and its sister companies have 37 vessels with 10 or more years without an environmental incident, with 11 of those vessels achieving 20+ years of environmental excellence. The Wedell Foss and the Stacey Foss are just two of the Foss Maritime vessels that have been free of environmental mishaps for more than 20 years.

Susan Hayman, Foss Maritime VP of HSQE & External Affairs, has been nominated by President Barack Obama to the United States Merchant Marine Academy's (USMMA) Board of Visitors. This key administrative post is for a term of two years, commencing at the beginning of each Congress. The board is made up of Congressional representatives and Presidential appointees, including two alumni. It provides oversight, advice and recommendations on matters relating to USMMA. Hayman is a 1980 graduate of USMMA and a 1986 graduate of Harvard Business School.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced the appointment of 29 new members to the Marine Transportation System National Advisory Committee (MTSNAC). Established in 2010, MTSNAC is comprised of leaders from commercial transportation firms, ship construction, repair and recycling, trade associations, state and local public entities, labor organizations, academics, and environmental groups that advise the Secretary and the Maritime Administration on policies to ensure that the U.S. Marine Transportation System is capable of responding to projected trade increases. The Committee advises the Secretary on solutions to impediments hindering effective use of short sea transportation and other matters as the Secretary determines.

The Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) announced the 2014 Environmental Achievement Awards honoring the Seattle company's work on November 13 in Washington, D.C. Foss and its sister companies have seen an average of 10 years without an environmental incident, with 12 vessels achieving 20-plus years of environmental excellence, including the Stellar Wind and the Arthur Foss.

The Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) says it has recognized Foss Maritime's commitment to safety by awarding Jones F. Devlin Safety Awards to 73 of the company's vessels for their outstanding safety records. The 2013 Jones F. Devlin award winners were recognized at the CSA Annual Safety Awards Luncheon held this year on May 29th in New Orleans. The award is given to self-propelled merchant vessels that have operated for two full years or more without a crew member losing a full turn at watch because of an occupational injury. The Jones F. Devlin award publicly recognizes the skills and dedication of the men and women who are responsible for those safe vessel operations. Altogether, the Foss vessels achieved the equivalent of 483 years without a lost-time injury.

Foss Maritime, founded by the matriarch of the Foss family in 1889, is as much a cultural icon on the U.S. West Coast as McAllister or Moran are on the East Coast. Norwegian immigrant Thea Foss began the business when she bought her first row boat in Tacoma, Wash. and painted it the signature green and white. The Foss family grew the business into a launch  service ferrying crew and supplies in the 1910s, then shifted into towing work in the 1940s. Foss Maritime Company, builder and operator of the world's first hybrid tugboat, will soon add another pioneering vessel to its Southern California fleet with the help of an air quality grant obtained by the Port of Long Beach. Building on the success of Foss' Carolyn Dorothy hybrid tug, which was launched into service at the Port of Long Beach in 2009, Foss will retrofit an existing tug with hybrid technology for service in San Pedro Bay, thanks to a $1m grant from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to the Port. The project will be implemented through a partnership between Foss, the Port of Long Beach, and the Port of Los Angeles. Foss will retrofit the Campbell Foss, a conventional dolphin tug currently assisting oceangoing vessels in the San Pedro Bay.

For 17 years, the Arthur Foss, a tugboat operated by the Foss Maritime Company, has been free of environmental mishap. So have the Drew Foss and a dozen other Foss vessels. Sixty-seven vessels owned by Foss and three subsidiaries are being recognized by a major maritime organization for their standout environmental safety records. The Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) is honoring the Foss vessels along with vessels from three Foss subsidiaries - Gulf Caribe Maritime, America Cargo Transport, and Constellation Maritime.

The Foss Maritime Company has created three new management positions aimed at strengthening its safety, compliance and environmental programs. Frank Williamson has been promoted to vice president, safety, quality and general counsel. Formerly Foss’ general counsel, Williamson will take on new responsibilities in health, safety, compliance and quality assurance. He will oversee the team responsible for developing and implementing safety and environmental programs. Susan Hayman, who spearheaded the development of Foss’ hybrid-powered, low-emissions tug due to enter service this fall, will become vice president for environmental and corporate development.

The ports of and was honored Foss Maritime Company, calling its innovative approach to reducing air pollution in southern an outstanding example of corporate leadership. Among Foss’ initiatives: Developing the world’s first hybrid tug, the Green Dolphin, a low-emission vessel that company officials expect to deploy in San Pedro Bay by the fall of 2008. Earlier this year, the federal Environmental Protection Agency gave Foss and the Green Dolphin its Clean Air Technology Award, the first time a marine operating company has ever received the honor. Susan Hayman, vice president for environmental and corporate development, accepted the award for corporate level leadership at the First Annual San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan – Clean Air Excellence Awards.
