Hapag-Lloyd Trials Biofuel

German shipping major Hapag-Lloyd announced that one of its ships recently refueled in Rotterdam with an eco-friendly biofuel, as part of its plan to reduce CO2 emissions."For the first time, the “Montreal Express” is being powered by so-called “B20” fuel, which consists of 80 percent low-sulfur fuel oil and 20 percent bio-diesel based on cooking oils and fats that had previously been used in the food service/catering industry," said a press note from the container transportation company.The biodiesel generates up to 90 percent less CO2 emissions than conventional fuels, it said.With this test, Hapag-Lloyd is taking another step towards reaching its ambitious climate-protection goals.“By the end of this year…

Hapag-Lloyd Publishes Sustainability Report

As one of the largest liner shipping companies, Hapag-Lloyd bears a special responsibility for the environment, for its customers and shareholders, and for its employees, said the container shipping company in its second sustainability report.German-based transportation giant pointed out that ninety percent of all goods traded worldwide are transported by ship. With its 227 vessels, Hapag-Lloyd transports approximately 12 million containers per year. Container shipping thereby makes a significant contribution to a well-functioning global trade network.The current sustainability report, titled “Gathering Pace Together”, also includes the legally required non-financial report.

Hapag-Lloyd to Cut CO2 Emissions by 20 % by 2020

Hapag-Lloyd is publishing the company’s first sustainability report ever yesterday (April 22) as the world celebrates “Earth Day,” which says that the company had achieved 46 percent reduction between 2007 and 2016. Within the report, the shipping company is announcing for the first time the climate goal it has set for itself: By 2020, Hapag-Lloyd intends to achieve a 20 percent reduction in CO2 emissions per TEU-kilometer (compared to 2016). Hapag-Lloyd has already succeeded in significantly lowering its CO2 emissions in the past. For example, between 2007 and 2016, the specific CO2 emissions of its fleet were reduced by 46 percent.

Shipbuilding Shows the Way for Sustainability Management

A new dissertation has been made at the University of Vaasa, Finland that shows how sustainable development can efficiently be combined into company businesses. The dissertation gives company leaders practical tools for guiding and managing the processes. Combining sustainability into business is often felt as a challenge, if not even impossible. Environmental aspects and social responsibility are seen as opposite requirements compared to financial targets of a company. The ever more stringent environmental legislation and the development of perception of morale are forcing business leaders to think about how they should develop their leadership. Hamburg Süd Receives Gold Rating from EcoVadis

Hamburg Süd has been awarded gold, the highest-possible recognition level, for its evaluation completed in July 2016 by the supply chain sustainability network EcoVadis. The scorecard provided by independent sustainability expert EcoVadis indicates that Hamburg Süd has achieved advanced sustainability management practice. Hamburg Süd received an above-average rating in all categories. In the category “Environment,” Hamburg Süd even set a new benchmark in the industry sector “Sea and coastal water transport” with the high score of 90 points. A particularly important aspect of the EcoVadis evaluation is energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Singapore Recognises 53 Ships Under Green Ship Programme

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) today recognised another 53 Green Ships from 41 companies that have qualified for the Green Ship Programme (GSP) at the Third Singapore Registry of Ships Forum (SRS Forum). The GSP encourages Singapore-flagged ships to reduce carbon dioxide and sulphur oxides emissions. Qualifying Singapore-flagged ships can enjoy a reduction of Initial Registration Fees and a rebate on Annual Tonnage Tax. Since the GSP's inception in 2011, 247 Green Ships under the Singapore Flag have joined the programme. Additionally, 10 maritime companies signed the Maritime Singapore Green Pledge. This brings the total number of signees to 100 companies since the initiative's inception in 2011.

Korean Shipyard Gets Top Sustainability Award

According to the 2011 company sustainability performance report published by Eco-Frontier, an intangible value assessment company, DSME received their AAA rating after Eco-Frontier had assessed 423 listed companies in Korea and divided them into seven grade levels ranging from AAA to CCC. 50 companies were awarded the AAA rating and DSME was the only recipient from the shipbuilding industry to receive this evaluation. DSME received an especially high score in environmental aspects such as risks factors, environmental management capacity, and strategic profit opportunity, as well as social aspects such as sustainable governance, human capital, stakeholder capital, products and services, and emerging markets. Jayne Matthews Joins BMT Group

BMT Group Ltd, a maritime design, engineering and risk management consultancy firm, has appointed Jayne Matthews Manager, Operational Risk. Matthews will be responsible for leading and managing risk and risk support activities, as well as the internal audits of BMT Group and BMT subsidiary companies.
