Wärtsilä Selected to ESI Excellence Europe

Wärtsilä has been selected as a constituent of the Ethibel Sustainability Index (ESI) Excellence Europe with effect from 23 March 2015. This is a remarkable continuation to the recognition  Wärtsilä received from Forum Ethibel in September 2014, when Wärtsilä was included in the Ethibel EXCELLENCE Investment Register. The Index members are chosen from among those companies listed in the Ethibel Investment Registers. The ESI indices universe is composed of companies included in the Russell Global Index that display the best performance in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility. The Ethibel Sustainability Index Excellence Europe includes 200 top performing European companies in this field.

Yangzijiang Diversifies into LNG Vessel Buildiing

Yangzijiang Shipbuilding (Holdings) Limited “Yangzijiang” or “the Group”  one of PRC’s leading and most enterprising shipbuilder listed on the SGX Main Board, is pleased to announce that the Group has secured new shipbuilding orders from JHW Engineering & Contracting Limited, a subsidiary of JACCAR Holdings, the company that owns EVERGAS, a world leader in ethylene and ethane gas transportation, to build two 27,500CBM LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) carriers. With downpayments duly received, the two LNG vessels worth US$135 million are now effective orders and included in Group’s order book. The orders are schedulded to be delivered in 2017. Bolidt Decking, Flooring for Viking Cruise Flagship

Bolidt Synthetic Products & Systems has secured a contract as exclusive partner to Viking Ocean Cruises for the supply of decking and flooring. The contract covers Viking Star, the first vessel due for delivery in 2015 and its sister ship, Viking Sky, scheduled for delivery in 2016, as well as options on a further two vessels. “Viking Cruises has a long tradition of working with Bolidt through our extensive ‘Longship’ river cruise program,” said Richard Goodwin,Vice President – Engineering, Viking Cruises.

Denmark's Eekels Wins Slow Steaming Technology Prize

Eekels informs it has been awarded the TBI Innovation Prize 2013 for its “Slow Steaming” entry. The vote was taken at the TBI TOP250 and no less than 66% of those present voted for Eekels’ ingenious technical innovation. Eekels was one of the 3 nominees that had been chosen from 34 entries by a jury chaired by Maxime Verhagen (chairman of Bouwend Nederland, the Dutch Construction and Infrastructure Federation). Eekels explains that due to the economic downturn, the freight rates in the shipping industry have been under pressure.

New Subsea Piledriver Uses Seawater

IHC Hydrohammer, part of IHC Merwede has developed and tested a new technology which uses seawater instead of hydraulic oil. This sustainable product development minimises potential oil spill hazards in the marine environment and presents new opportunities for deep-water offshore pile driving that will be beneficial to the future growth of offshore construction. The S-90W IHC Waterhammer has been utilised in conjunction with Swiber Offshore Construction. The installation contractor used the advanced pile-driving hammer to install four foundation piles on the subsea PLEM (pipeline end manifold) located approximately 210km off the west coast of Mumbai, India.

Sustainable Carrier Transicold PrimeLINE Units

The PrimeLINE unit from Carrier Transicold has achieved a new distinction in sustainability, becoming the first container refrigeration system with a UL Environment validation for recyclability. As validated by UL Environment using its Environmental Claims Validation Procedure 2789, the PrimeLINE unit is 93 percent recyclable. Carrier Transicold helps improve global transport and shipping temperature control with a complete line of equipment for refrigerated trucks, trailers and containers, and is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. Damen Develops Nozzle Spinning Method

Damen Marine Components (DMC) has developed a pioneering nozzle production method based on a single weld seam on the inner side of the nozzle. Dutch Decks for German-built Passenger Ships

German shipbuilder Meyer Werft and Dutch deck specialist Bolidt Kunststoftoepassing BV have extended their close relationship. This includes work on the latest cruise ship to be built at Meyer Werft’s Papenburg shipyard. The 130,000gt vessel, delivered this month, is fitted with some 15,500 m2 of Bolidt material for the outdoor decks. Hapag-Lloyd Launches Emissions Calculator

The EcoCalc is one of the few emissions calculators in liner shipping to cover not only the ocean leg, but also the emissions of the other modes of transport for the pre-carriage and on-carriage. With the launch of the new EcoCalc, Hapag-Lloyd reports that it has become the first shipping company in the world to introduce an emissions calculator that not only shows CO2 emissions, but also those of sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM10) for a given container transport. In addition, EcoCalc is one of the few emissions calculators in liner shipping to cover not only the ocean leg, but also the emissions of the other modes of transport for the pre-carriage and on-carriage.
