Wärtsilä Waste Treatment for Princess Cruises
The Finnish technology major Wartsila will supply and install an Auto Gasification solution for the Regal Princess, enabling the safe disposal of waste from the ship through a self-fueling thermal decomposition unit, thereby significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.The gasification unit on Princess Cruises’ vessel will reduce the ship’s waste to less than 5% of it is original volume, turning it into a sterilize inert material called Bio Char and a synthetic gas that will be recycled within the unit as fuel, said a press release.It will also lessen the requirement to offload waste at shore facilities. Princess Cruises is a Carnival Corporation & plc brand operating as part of the Holland America Group.
Waste-to-Chemistry Project Comes up in Rotterdam Port
A consortium of companies comprising Air Liquide, AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals, Enerkem and the Port of Rotterdam Authority has signed a development agreement for the initial investments in an advanced waste-to-chemistry plant in Rotterdam. The aim is that this will be the first plant of this type in Europe to offer a sustainable alternative for waste incineration, by converting plastic and mixed waste into new raw materials for industry. These investments – for detailed engineering, the establishment of a special joint-venture and the conclusion of the licensing procedure – amount to some € 9 million. Coast Guard Academy Cadet to Receive Fulbright Scholarship
Stephen Horvath, a first class cadet at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, was recently granted a two-year Fulbright Scholarship to study renewable energy technologies in Finland during the 2015-2016 academic year and the 2016-2017 academic year. Horvath, 21, will pursue a master’s degree at the Lappeenranta University of Technology in Lappeenranta, Finland. The mechanical engineering major plans to conduct a research project on methods for energy storage. Horvath’s research project will examine the conversion technologies used to store energy created from wind turbines and solar cells.
Rickmers-Linie Carries Linde Coldboxes to Saudi Arabia
Components for industrial plants are regularly shipped on board Rickmers-Linie’s heavy lift multipurpose vessels, supporting supply chains for a wide range of industries. In November, Rickmers-Linie carried two coldboxes, which had been manufactured by Linde AG, from Bremen to Jubail in Saudi Arabia. Loading onto the ocean vessel Rickmers Chennai took place in Bremen in November. The two 31.44m x 14m x 9.5m coldboxes, weighing 359 metric tons each, were lifted onboard by the ship’s own cranes.
