The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary on Wednesday announced the successful digital acoustic tagging of 14 sei whales in waters offshore Massachusetts. This is the first time researchers have successfully tagged an endangered species in the United States using an uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV), or drone. Holland America Line has appointed Denella Ri’chard to the position of director, trade communication and engagement. In this newly created role she is responsible for supporting travel agent partners worldwide, with particular focus on the United States and Canada. She oversees trade communications, the PartnerShips website, HAL Academy and all other internal and external training programs. KVH Industries, Inc., announced today that Chris Holm has joined the company to drive strategic leadership in key human resources initiatives supporting KVH’s growth. He assumes the title of vice president of human resources, a newly created role within the company. From its headquarters in Middletown, Rhode Island, KVH has a global presence that includes offices around the world. The culmination of a century-long dream to link the Great Lakes interior industrial hubs to the Atlantic Ocean, the St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Project stands as one of the largest public works initiatives of the 20th century. Between 1954-1959, the billion-dollar St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Project was the largest waterway and hydro dam project ever jointly built by two nations. It comprised seven locks, the widening of various canals, the taming of rapids, and the erection of the 3,216-foot long, 195.5-foot high Robert Moses-Robert H. Saunders Power Dam. Through the decades the Seaway has seen the transport of 2.5 billion tons of cargo (equivalent to 87 million truckloads) valued in excess of $375 billion. It also produces hydroelectric power for both countries.

Driven by decade-high oil prices, industry leader Baker Hughes Incorporated reported operating profit after tax from continuing operations for the third quarter of 2000, excluding non-operational items, was $70.6 million, up 456% compared with $12.7 million for the third quarter of 1999, and up 72% compared with $41 million for the second quarter of 2000. Net income for the third quarter of 2000 was $66.7 million compared to $13.2 million for the third quarter of 1999. Duramax Marine, a world leader in water-lubricated rubber bearings, recently broke ground on a new facility that will streamline the company's current manufacturing operations. The facility, with approximately 65,000 sq. ft. of factory and office space will consolidate production and administration into one centralized location in Troy Township, Ohio, approximately 40 miles south east of Cleveland. Vice Adm. Jeffrey L. Fowler relieved Vice Adm. Rodney P. Rempt as Superintendent of the United States Naval Academy during a change of command ceremony held in Alumni Hall on June 8. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Mullen praised Rempt’s accomplishments during his four years at the Naval Academy, commending his focus on developing midshipmen as combat leaders of character. “As a Naval Academy grad, I want to thank you for all that you have done for my alma mater, the naval services, and the nation,” Mullen said. Rempt, a surface warfare officer and a 1966 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, became the 59th superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy in August 2003. “I am eternally indebted to the finest faculty in the country,” said Rempt.

President Clinton's budget transmitted to Congress includes $4.06 billion for the USACE Civil Works program. In addition the program will include $322 million in non-federal contributions and trust fund receipts. Funding in this request will be used to continue the development of the nation's water resources, the efficient operations, maintenance and management of the nation's navigation, flood damage reduction, and multiple-purpose projects, the equitable regulation of wetlands, and the restoration of important environmental resources such as the South Florida Ecosystem. The budget also begins to address some of the Corps long-term water resources infrastructure main-tenance requirements.
