Louisiana-based boat builder Metal Shark is building a welded aluminum monohull patrol vessel for the Guyana Defense Force (GDF).Construction of the 115ft x 27ft (35m x 8m) vessel is underway at Metal Shark’s Franklin, Louisiana shipyard on the new 115 Defiant multi-mission vessel designed in-house by Metal Shark’s engineering team and being acquired by the GDF via direct purchase. Switzerland-headquartered developer of low-speed gas and diesel engines for marine propulsion Winterthur Gas & Diesel Ltd (WinGD) has launched four new short-stroke engines to address economic engine speeds and accommodate space constraints on several vessel types.The engine designer said in a press note that the range, starting with the X52-S2.0 and X62-S2.0 and their dual-fuel counterparts X52DF-S1.0 and X62DF-S1.0, feature a short piston stroke that is ideal for vessels with a shallow draught, small propeller diameter or low main deck height. Container feeders, ro-ro and con-ro vessels, multipurpose cargo vessels and vehicle carriers all have design conditions that demand a shorter stroke.

Wärtsilä has opened its purpose-built Acceleration Center in Singapore to promote innovation and collaboration with industry, academia and local partners to strengthen and develop Singapore’s maritime ecosystem. The opening follows an agreement signed between Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Wärtsilä in April 2018 to collaborate in areas of intelligent vessels, connected smart port operations, cyber-physical security, and digital acceleration with start-ups.

Excelerate Energy said t its newly upgraded floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) Explorer recently completed its sendout performance tests and reached a sendout capacity of 1.0 Bcf/d – an unprecedented milestone for an FSRU. The FSRU is currently under long-term charter to Dubai Supply Authority (DUSUP) at the Jebel Ali LNG Import Terminal. ZIM Integrated Shipping Services has announced the expansion of its refrigerated container fleet in order to answer the demand for its innovative ZIMonitor service. Launched in early 2015, ZIMonitor allows customers to track, monitor and remotely control sensitive, high-value cargo stowed in refrigerated, or reefer, containers. Customers can opt to receive alerts regarding their shipment via text message or email, closely monitor their cargo's status and intervene to prevent damages through ZIM's 24/7 dedicated global response team. An order of approximately 1,900x40-Feet High-Cube refrigerated containers is planned to be deployed during 2016.

ZIM integrated shipping services has announced the launching of a new monitoring, tracking and security services package, specifically designed for valuable and sensitive cargo stowed in reefer containers. The service allows customers to closely monitor their cargo's status, change settings remotely and intervene to prevent damages. The announcement was made at the Cool Chain & Temperature Controlled Logistics Europe conference in Frankfurt, where it will be showcased between January 26th and 29th.
