GE Oil & Gas New Facility in Jebel Ali Free Zone

GE Oil & Gas today celebrated the ground-breaking of a new facility that will further expand its presence in the UAE in Jebel Ali Free Zone (Jafza). Scheduled to open in 2015, the new facility spreads over an area of 22,700 sqm and can accommodate over 300 employees. A milestone in the expansion of GE Oil & Gas in the country and the region, the new facility will offer services by GE Oil & Gas’ various business units, thus strengthening customer service standards. Housed in a customized state-of-the-art facility developed by Jafza, the new GE Oil & Gas Manufacturing & Technology Center will offer tailored training programs, and also feature a dedicated repair center that will help improve the speed of service delivered by being closer to the customers.

BMT Defense Services goes 3D with AVEVA Marine

AVEVA announced that BMT Defense Services Ltd (BMT) has chosen AVEVA Marine software to serve its current and future customers through improved design efficiency. BMT has selected AVEVA Marine to enable tighter integration between its hull and outfitting disciplines, aiming to improve design efficiency through closer collaboration between disciplines. “AVEVA Marine is used by our key clients, and many potential clients, and hence was an obvious choice for us,” said Roy Quilliam, Technical Director, BMT Defense Services Ltd.

GL Bolsters Support of Green Ship Recycling in Asia

Hamburg/Shanghai, 3 May 2011 - Germanischer Lloyd (GL) has recently intensified its efforts to help shipyards, ship owners, suppliers and recycling facilities in Asia to comply with the forthcoming International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships ("Hong Kong Convention"). Two well-trained GL ship recycling experts are now stationed in China and Singapore respectively, offering all stakeholders a full range of services including certification, consultancy and tailored training.

PD Ports Apprentice Recognized

A student project which has led to significant safety improvements at North East-based Teesport has won Daniel McDougal, an engineering apprentice at PD Ports, runner-up prize in the Skills Showcase 2009 event. For the project, part of a four-year course for the Higher National Certificate in Engineering, Daniel designed a mechanical grab trailer to make it safer to fix the grabs to cranes on the dock, at Teesport. The grabs are attached to the Port’s Gottwald cranes and are used for discharging up to 30 bulk cargo vessels in a year at Teesport and Hartlepool docks.

USNS Grasp Crew Improves School Building in Antigua

Civil service mariners from Military Sealift Command rescue and salvage ship USNS Grasp completed three days and more than 445 man-hours of improvement projects at the for the Deaf and for the Blind Unit in yesterday. Grasp arrived in Antigua July 4 as part of a four-month international outreach mission to the . While the ship’s embarked team of 15 Navy divers conducted tailored training and security operations with military divers from , and , Grasp’s civil service mariners sought out an opportunity to do a goodwill project ashore.
