Autonomy: The Vision of Autonomous Shipping

Rolls-Royce and the European Space Agency (ESA) have signed a ground-breaking cooperation agreement aimed at pursuing space activities in support of autonomous, remote controlled shipping and promoting innovation in European digital logistics.

The end of 2018 provides an excellent opportunity to highlight some of the measures that have been taken by the maritime industry over the past year to develop a better understanding of autonomous shipping. A drive towards autonomous shipping has been embraced by many major players such as Rolls Royce and Wärtsilä, and this has led to numerous new strategies, visions, and projects that are pushing the boundaries of technological innovation. New Thruster Solutions Developed for Arctic Shipping

A team of European marine research institutes and companies have developed creative technologies for thruster solutions that are specifically engineered for ships operating in the Arctic.With the new solutions created under the three-year ArTEco project led by Finland's VTT and Wärtsilä, thruster lifetimes can be increased, their maintenance need can be decreased and their reliability improved, particularly in extreme conditions, the project partners said.While at sea, a ship must overcome tough resistance as it displaces water masses from its path.

Rolls-Royce Marine is taking a leading position in developing and introducing the systems and technologies needed for the running of a successful business in the maritime industry of the 21st century. At a company presentation held in London earlier this year, Mikael Mäkinen, President of Rolls-Royce Marine, outlined the company’s vision for the future and its strategies to put these new systems based on new technologies into place.

Kokko Appointed Sr.V.P.-Automation & Projects, Kalmar

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has appointed Tero Kokko Senior Vice President, Automation and Projects as of 1 July 2016. He will report to Antti Kaunonen, current Senior Vice President, Automation and Projects who will start as President of Kalmar as of 1 July 2016. Tero Kokko (Doctor of Technology) has worked for Kalmar since 2011, most recently as Vice President, Intelligent Horizontal Transportation Solutions business line. Measuring Shipping Emissions in the Arctic

A new global challenge and a compliance monitoring market are emerging, due to tightening environmental regulations. VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd, the Finnish Meteorological Institute, Tampere University of Technology and the University of Turku have joined forces in an international project – Shipping Emissions in the Arctic – with the aim of making the measurement of black carbon emissions from shipping more reliable. The initial results show that engine loads and fuel types have a major impact on black carbon emissions from ships.

Rolls-Royce to Lead Autonomous Ship Research

Rolls-Royce announced it will take the lead on a €6.6 million project that could pave the way for autonomous ships. Kaunonen to Head Automation & Projects at Kalmar

Antti Kaunonen has been appointed as Senior Vice President, Automation and Projects, Kalmar, part of Cargotec. Antti Kaunonen brings with him over 25 years of experience from industrial businesses and deep knowledge in automation. He has delivered proven success in building automation and project business capabilities in global companies. Before joining Kalmar, Antti worked at Voith in Germany close to eight years in different management positions heading Voith Paper Automation, Voith Paper EMEA Region and, most recently, Voith Hydro Automation. Before Voith, Antti worked for Metso Automation over 20 years in various key roles. During this time he lived five years in the USA and over one year in China.

Cargotec Make Deal on Technology & Competence Center

W. P. Carey Inc., a  provider of corporate sale-leaseback financing, has acquired the R&D and class-A office facilities of Cargotec Corporation in Tampere, Finland. The premises are subject to a 20-year triple-net lease with the company. The total acquisition cost of the 183,569 square foot facility was approximately $52 million (€40 million). The facility was completed in December 2012 as a "Technology and Competence Center" dedicated to research and development of energy-efficient, safe and intelligent machinery and automation solutions.
