The Duclos family is iconic in boatbuilding circles, as the Somerset, Mass.-based Gladding-Hearn, Duclos Corporation, has built a strong heritage in the pilot boat and fast ferry sectors, and in total more than 425 vessels have been delivered since it was founded in 1955. Today a trio of second-generation siblings run the yard, brothers and co-presidents John and Peter Duclos with sister Carol Hegarty serving as CFO. First Offshore Aquaculture Development Green Lighted

The Norwegian Ministry of Trade and Fisheries has approved Norway’s first development concession enabling Ocean Farming AS, supported by Kongsberg Maritime AS, to build the world’s first automated ‘exposed’ aquaculture facility. Situated outside of Trondheim, this new facility introduces a paradigm shift in salmon farming now, and other fish types in the future and is a significant step in Norway’s efforts to deliver technical solutions to address the impending global food gap challenge.

Kongsberg, DNV & IBM Developing Environmental Monitor

Kongsberg to head up major Norwegian Consortium with DNV and IBM to develop integrated Environmental Monitoring System. In order to reduce the environmental risks from oil and gas operations, a consortium consisting of KONGSBERG, IBM, and DNV will now develop a real-time environmental monitoring solution together with their client Statoil. The 150 MNOK project is led by KONGSBERG and will use integrated technology to create a step change for the operators’ access and operational usage of environmental data.

Christian Joins Creative Systems

John W. Christian started his maritime career at Kings Point, USMMA, in the 1970s performing classwork on facility-sized mainframes, while Creative Systems was developing stability software on similar machines in Seattle. Since then John has accumulated wide-ranging experience in marine and computer technology while Creative Systems has become a leading supplier of marine software. Christian combines experience in merchant, naval, and offshore activities, both international and domestic, with business, computer, and training backgrounds.

Lockheed Martin Awarded Contract for Sonar Upgrades for U.S. Navy Submarines

The U.S. Navy has awarded Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) a contract valued at more than $61 million for continued support to the Acoustic Rapid Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) Insertion (A-RCI) program. A-RCI is a sonar system upgrade installed on all classes of U.S. Navy submarines. The system integrates and improves the processing of data from sensors including the towed array, hull array and sphere array. These improvements are achieved by use of COTS-based hardware and software that speeds processing while enhancing fidelity. The contract will provide engineering, technical services and associated materials for the design and development of upgrades and systems support for the A-RCI program.

Aker Kvaerner Acquires Drilling Technology Company

Aker Kvaerner has signed an agreement for acquisition of 50 percent of the shares in the German company Wirth Maschinen- und Bohrgeräte-Fabrik GmbH (Wirth) with an option to buy the remaining shares within the next years. Wirth is a quality supplier of drilling equipment such as mud pumps, drawworks and components for top drives. In addition the company provides tunnel and foundation boring machines for infrastructure projects and products for the mining and processing industries. Wirth has been a key supplier for the Aker Kvaerner subsidiary Aker Kvaerner MH for more than 20 years and Wirth's products have been included in many of the complete drilling packages recently awarded to Aker Kvaerner MH.
