The construction of the first onshore power supply plant for commer-cial vessels at the Norwegenkai Terminal in the port of Kiel has begun.Taking part in the official first-cut-of-the-spade-ceremony marking the start of the construction works at the Norwegenkai Terminal were the Economics Minister of the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein, Dr Bernd Buchholz, Kiel’s Lord Mayor Dr Ulf Kämpfer, Port Director Dr Dirk Claus und Color Line GmbH Managing Director Dirk Hundertmark along with Lars Nürnberger, head of Kiel’s Siemens AG branch office.As of spring 2019, it will be possible to supply big cruise ferries with all the electrical power they need during the time they are berthed in Kiel.“We are taking action to make a substantial contribution to air purification”…
Port of Kiel Reports 2013 Handling Performance
Rail/ship intermodal handling achieves double-digit growth. The port of Kiel said it successfully maintained a sound handling result in 2013. With a performance of 6.32 million tons the result for the previous year was even slightly surpassed by 12,000 tons resp. 0.2 %. The ferry lines form the backbone of the port’s business, rising up to 5.1 million tons (plus 1.3 %) and thereby making up more than 80 % of the total handling rate. The biggest increase was achieved by Stena Line on its route Kiel-Gothenburg, while DFDS Seaways features the highest transport volume.
Kiel Striking Positive Balance of Cruise Season 2013
Third terminal berth for large cruise ships in operation. When the “AIDAcara” is heading out to Copenhagen at around 5 p.m. today, October 2, Kiel’s cruise shipping season will find its preliminary finish for the current year. Preliminary, as one more ship will again be welcomed in December on its Advent Cruise. So, Port of Kiel saw 128 calls by 22 different cruise ships with a total tonnage of more than 7.8 million GT. Port of Kiel Expands Cruise Capacities
Extension of Berth No.1 at Kiel’s Ostuferhafen has started. The Port of Kiel – third largest turnaround port for cruises in northern Europe - is expanding its handling capacities for cruise ships. Construction work for the extension of Berth No.1 at Ostuferhafen has begun, so that large cruise ships can dock there this summer already.
