Blowtorch Used to Free Mariners from Sinking Tug in Sabine Pass

Four mariners were rescued in dramatic fashion from a tugboat that was sinking in Sabine Pass, Texas, on Friday.The U.S. Coast Guard said its watchstanders at Sector Houston-Galveston command center were notified at 5:38 a.m. that the crew of the 71-foot tug Sea Cypress hailed mayday on VHF-FM channel 13 and reported they were capsizing while moored near the mouth of the Sabine Pass channel.Watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and directed the launch of…

Stephen H. DonCarlos Named to Port Commission

Attorney Stephen H. DonCarlos was appointed to the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority by the Harris County Mayors and Councils Association on Sept. 19. The Harris County Mayors and Councils Association is an organization representing 26 cities in Harris County. Port Commissioners serve two-year terms without pay. DonCarlos was named to the seat previously held by Jimmy Burke. Burke  had served as Port Commissioner since 1999. An attorney with Reid, Strickland & Gillette, L.L.P., DonCarlos was elected as Mayor of the City of Baytown in May 2006.

Lanier Re-Appointed Port Commission, Houston

The Port of Houston Authority announced that Elyse Lanier has been re-appointed to serve as a member of the Port Commission, its governing body. The vote on October 12 by the Harris County Commissioners Court was unanimous. Commissioner Lanier was initially appointed to the Port Commission in February 2006. Port Commissioners serve two-year terms without pay. “Elyse Lanier is a prime example of the kind of people that make Houston and Harris County such a wonderful place to live and work,” said Harris County Judge Ed Emmett.
