The U.S. gateway for trans-Pacific trade Port of Long Beach announced $100,000 in scholarships for 77 local college and high school students as part of a dramatically expanded and acclaimed education outreach effort. The students receiving the scholarships were recognized at the Port’s sixth-annual “Celebrating Education” event, along with the Port’s 25 incoming high school summer interns, and the 22 local teachers who were trained in engineering education earlier this year as part of the Port's externship program. The event brings together students, educators, public officials and business leaders to highlight the Port’s education outreach programs and accomplishments in the goods movement industry. The Worldwide Ferry Safety Association (WFSA) announces its sixth annual international student design competition for a safe affordable ferry, seeking designs for a passenger vessel to traverse the iconic Pasig River of Metropolitan Manila. Metropolitan Manila, composed of 18 municipalities (including the City of Manila), is a flourishing vibrant joyous city with a total population of 24 million people. The metro area would benefit from a ferry system to relieve congestion. The City of Manila itself (population 1.8 million) has the distinction of being considered the most densely populated city on earth. Like many other modern cities Metro Manila is rediscovering its river for passenger transport.

Mercury Marine's Juarez, Mexico, plant recently received the Brunswick Corporation Chairman's Safety Award for excellence in safety and employee engagement. The presentation held on Friday June 4 in Juarez, featured Brunswick Corporation CEO Dustin McCoy, Brunswick Corporation COO Mark Schwabero, Mercury Marine V.P. of Global Operations Chris Drees and other executives at the company. In conjunction with this award, Brunswick will donate $10,000 on behalf of Juarez employees to a charitable organization of their choice. Dorothy Shaw, Manager of community relations at Huntington Ingalls Industries',Ingalls Shipbuilding division, recently received the "Forever Young" award at the Coast Young Professionals' sixth annual Black Tie and Blue Jeans Gala. Ten "Forever Young" awards are given annually to influential leaders who have acted as mentors to the network of more than 300 young professionals in the organization. According to Coast Young Professionals, "Forever Young" candidates are persons of professional integrity who exemplify the spirit of service to their professions and who have, by their leadership, made a significant contribution to the advancement of a Coast Young Professionals member's career.

From October 31-November 2, 2013, the State University of New York Maritime College (SUNYMC), in partnership with the Maritime Administration (MARAD), will host the sixth annual Women on the Water (WOW) Conference in Throggs Neck, NY. The Conference will bring cadets from the State Maritime Academies and midshipmen from the United States Maritime Academy together with professional women and men who are leaders in various sectors of the maritime industry. The event will be an excellent opportunity for the cadets/midshipmen to learn about the exciting careers that are open to them directly from successful women and men, as well as hear about current issues affecting the maritime industry.

Huntington Ingalls Industries' Newport News Shipbuilding's 'HealthWaves' wellness program host the sixth annual 5K fun run. The 5K is a fun event that encourages families, friends and co-workers to get out and do something active together," said Brady Goggin, HealthWaves' program coordinator. This, the sixth annual 5K fun run started at Victory Landing Park near the Virginia Advanced Shipbuilding and Carrier Integration Center (VASCIC) and went north on West Avenue to 35th Street.

The assumption that trade conditions and infrastructure will drive future transportation changes will be the overriding theme at the sixth annual American Association of Port Authorities’ (AAPA) “Shifting International Trade Routes” workshop in Tampa, Fla., Jan. 24-25, 2013. The 1½-day program, which is being cosponsored by the U.S. Maritime Administration and hosted by the Tampa Port Authority, will address the range of issues related to dynamic, global and hemispheric trade.

The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) changes date of 'Shifting International Trade Routes' workshop, details other events. The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA)—the trade association representing seaports throughout the Western Hemisphere—has slated 13 maritime industry programs for 2013, including its sixth annual “Shifting International Trade Routes” workshop in Tampa, Jan. 24-25; its annual Spring Conference in Washington, D.C., March 18-19; and its 102nd Annual Convention and Exposition, Oct. 13-17, in Port Canaveral, Orlando and Cocoa Beach, Fla., hosted by the Canaveral Port Authority.

Ingram Barge Company received the Southeast Diesel Collaborative “Leadership Award” for its environmental sustainability efforts utilizing advanced clean diesel technology on towboats operating on the inland river system. Ingram was recognized as a private industry leader in the national effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. An award also went to Miami-Dade County, Florida, government in the “community leader” category. The awards were announced at the Collaborative’s sixth annual Partners Meeting involving the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other federal, state and local government agencies, non-profits, and industry organizations. Ingram is the largest inland marine transportation company in the U.S. moving nearly 100 million tons of cargo annually on our nation’s rivers.

Volunteer groups and individuals are invited to join the New York State Canal Corporation staff for the annual Canal Clean Sweep, scheduled for the weekend of April 15-17, 2011. The events along the 524-mile-long Canal system help celebrate Earth Day and to prepare the canals for the regular navigation season that is scheduled to begin on May 1, 2011. Brian U. In recognition of the International Maritime Organization’s “Year of Piracy”, WISTA USA hosted world renowned piracy negotiator, Suzanne Williams QPM, as their keynote speaker at its sixth annual WISTA USA luncheon on Monday, kicking off the Connecticut Maritime Association’s Shipping 2011 conference. The luncheon was attended by nearly 250 industry professionals and maritime cadets. Ms. Williams described first hand experiences in her dealings with pirate negotiations, and offered suggestions for combating the scourge.

In preparation for the 187th navigation season of the New York State Canal System and to mark Earth Day 2011, the New York State Canal Corporation, in partnership with Parks and Trails New York and the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation, announced that it is seeking volunteers for the Sixth Annual "Canal Clean Sweep" scheduled for the weekend of April 15–17. The Canal Clean Sweep highlights the canal system as a major recreational and tourism destination in New York state by encouraging communities, businesses and not-for-profit organizations to engage in cleanup and beautification activities on Canal lands and along the Canalway Trail. Last year, more than 90 groups participated in the Canal Clean Sweep weekend.

The U.S. Coast Guard’s Maritime Safety and Security Teams (MSSTs) lent its specialized training to the sixth annual Southeast Asia Cooperation Against Terrorism (SEACAT) exercise which concluded Aug. 21. SEACAT was an at-sea, scenario-driven, fleet training exercise involving the U.S. along with six Southeast Asian countries tracking and boarding simulated critical contacts of interest. U.S. Coast Guard Lt. David Alvarez, a planning action officer specializing in Maritime Security Operations for the Coast Guard’s Pacific Area Command, said the exercise is not only beneficial for the hands-on and live-action training experience, but also opens the door for information sharing and learning for everyone involved.

Senator Robert C. Byrd (D-WV) will receive the Sixth Annual Waterways Council, Inc. Leadership Service Award on February 28 at the Willard Hotel, Washington, DC. Senator Byrd will be honored for his steadfast commitment to the improvement of the Nation’s ports and commercial inland waterways system over his many years in Congress. Past recipients of the award include Representative David Hobson (2006); Representative Jerry Costello and Representative John Duncan, Jr. (2005); Senator Kit Bond (2004); Senator John Breaux (2003), and Representative Sonny Callahan (2002). Senator Byrd is Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, appointed to the Committee by then-Majority Leader Lyndon B. Johnson in 1959, the year Senator Byrd began his Senate service.

As the inland waterways industry looks back on 2006 and forward to 2007, Waterways Council, Inc. • President Bush’s FY 2007 proposed budget requested a record level of federal funding for 11 Inland Waterways Trust Fund (IWTF)-financed projects. The budget request proposed FY ’07 spending of $394 million for Inland Waterways Trust Fund financed projects, of which $197 million would come from the dedicated Inland Waterways Trust Fund. The remainder would come from general treasury funds, as required under current law. The President’s FY ‘07 budget request is the highest funding recommendation for IWTF funded projects since cost-sharing legislation was enacted into law in 1986.
