Canadian headquartered naval architecture firm Robert Allan Ltd. announced that its Executive Chairman, Robert G. "Rob" Allan, has been made an Honorary Member by the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME), making him one of only 50 living individuals to enjoy this privilege. This membership is awarded to a person as result of their dedicated service to the maritime industry and the Society and is a symbol of recognition offered as a token of the high esteem in which their colleagues hold them.SNAME has previously honored Rob Allan with many accolades.

Many years ago, I received a call from an attorney who wanted me to get on the plane to Houston right away to take a look at damage on two ships that had collided in the approaches to Houston.He told me that both vessels had become confused, had started to turn and managed to occupy the same bit of ocean at the same time. Today the results of the World Ferry Safety Association international student design competition for a Safe Affordable Ferry were announced. The goal of the design competition is to elicit new approaches for ferry design in the developing world as well as to encourage designers to enter this arena, for which there is a need and an emerging market. SNAME announced its call for papers for its 2011 annual meeting November 16 – 18, 2011, in Houston , Texas.

The Marine Vessel Environmental Performance (MVeP) Assessment was presented November 4th, 2010 at the SNAME Annual Meeting. This is the work of SNAME T&R Panel EV-10 previously Ad-hoc Panel 19. Eleanor Nick Kirtley and Tim Leach of the Glosten Associates presented to an audience of about 50. The Glosten Associates also featured MVeP at their booth in the Expo where many conference attendees were able to speak with the presenters and other participants including Matt Winkler, VP of Seaworthy Systems – Roll Royce. In Phase 1, MVeP developed a checklist of environmental impacts resulting from marine vessels. Each impact can be assessed on its own merit, and the compilation of all assessments makes clear the trade-offs of various measures giving a holistic view of the ship’s performance.

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) awarded their highest honor, the David W. Taylor Medal for notable achievement in naval architecture or marine engineering, to ABS Senior Vice President of Technology Peter Tang-Jensen at the society’s Annual Banquet during the SNAME Annual Meeting and Expo in Seattle, Wash. A well-respected member of the maritime community with more than 35 years of experience in shipbuilding design and engineering, Tang-Jensen has been providing strategic leadership for the classification society’s research and product development efforts since 2006. The ABS technology leader and former Executive Vice President of Odense Steel Shipyard, Ltd.

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) is calling for Authors, Reviewers, and Sponsors for Phase 2 of the Marine Vessel Environmental Performance (MVeP) program. This effort is pulling together industry experts and stakeholders to identify the relative merits of the many environmental practices available for marine vessels. MVeP is being developed to provide vessel owners, operators, designers, ports, and other governing bodies with a standard methodology to assess the relative impacts of environmental practices. Thirty-four discrete marine vessel environmental impacts have been identified. MVeP will provide a Performance Assessment Guide, based on objective technical information, for each of these impacts.

Challenging economic conditions didn’t stop a record number of industry professionals from attending The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) 2009 Annual Meeting and Expo. The three-day event (October 21-23) drew more than 1,150 to the Providence, Rhode Island Convention Center. "In all aspects, the 2009 SNAME Annual Meeting was a resounding success. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to those who attended the meeting, the many SNAME volunteers who organized the technical programs and social events, the meeting sponsors and those who exhibited at our EXPO. We look to build on this success and promise an exciting and stimulating meeting in Seattle/Bellevue in 2010,” said SNAME President Keith Michel.

Ed Waryas, Vice President & Marine Development Manager for Lloyd’s Register North America, Inc. has received the Lauren S. McCready Award for 2009. This award is presented annually by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Association for “Outstanding Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering Contributions to the Maritime Industry.”  The award recognizes alumni who are members of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) and who have made significant technical achievements possible. It is named for Rear Admiral Lauren S.

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) recognized four individuals for their outstanding contributions to naval architecture and marine engineering. The annual achievement medals were presented at the SNAME Annual Banquet, held during the SNAME 2009 Annual Meeting and Expo in Providence, R.I. The society’s top award, the Vice Admiral "Jerry" Land Medal for outstanding accomplishment in the marine field, was presented to Robert D. Somerville, Chairman and Chief Executive officer of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

The Aluminum Association, Inc. The recent publication of the new specification - ASTM B928 High Magnesium Aluminum-Alloy Sheet & Plate for Marine Service - is the culmination of a cooperative effort between numerous parties involved in the marine industry including aluminum producers, boat builders, the Coast Guard and marine classification societies. The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) will present the SNAME 2008 Annual Meeting October 15-17, 2008 in . This technical meeting will features new and expanded conference programming. In 2008, SNAME will celebrate its 115th anniversary. The theme of the SNAME 2008 Annual Meeting is ”Celebrating our Past, Engineering our Future”. A part of the conference programming will take a retrospective look at the range of changes and innovations that have taken place in the profession and industry over these past 115 years. The SNAME 2008 Annual Meeting educational programming will build on the strengths of SNAME’s technical integrity. In addition to these formal educational sessions the new 2008 Annual Meeting format will also include opportunities for peer-to-peer networking.

Following on from the success of the special panel sessions at the 2008 Annual Meeting held in Houston, Texas, SNAME will have an expanded Special Panel program at its 2009 Annual Meeting. The SNAME Annual Meeting which will take place from 21-23 of October in Providence, Rhode Island, will feature four Special Panel Sessions.
