Singapore Announces Maritime Scholarship Awards

At an award ceremony in Singapore this week, 60 MaritimeONE Scholarships and seven Tripartite Maritime Scholarships (TMSS) were presented, sponsored by 34 partners from industry, foundations, and unions.The number surpassed last year’s award of 54 scholarships by 27 partners. More companies have come onboard to support MaritimeONE Scholarships in recent years, reflecting the focus on talent development by Maritime Singapore. Marlink to Provide Hybrid Network Connectivity to 100 Ships operated by Thome Group

Maritime communications specialist Marlink has signed an agreement to provide hybrid network connectivity services to at least 100 ships operated by shipmanager Thome Group. The contract will guarantee that the vessels are equipped with Marlink’s high speed VSAT service as well as L-band back-up to ensure flexible guaranteed bandwidth at all times. Based in Singapore, the Thome Group provides integrated ship management services, as well as offshore management, oil and gas marine services and crewing.The company has about 200 vessels under full technical management.

Maritime Giants Launch Competition to Drive Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Six giants in the global maritime industry have joined forces to address diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) issues.The Maritime Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Innovation Lab 2022, launched by Thome Group, Hafnia, Anglo American, RightShip, Rio Tinto, and Wilhelmsen, is an open competition for interested participants (individuals, institutions, companies, students etc.) to submit their ideas on addressing DEI in the maritime industry.Shortlisted teams will participate in the innovation lab to hone their pitches in preparation for a ‘Dragon’s Den’ session with industry leaders.

Relief Fund Raises $530,000 for Seafarers Impacted by COVID-19

Thome Group, Carsten Rehder Form Ship Management JV

Singapore-base ship management firm Thome Group and German shipowner Carsten Rehder have agreed to cooperate in a joint venture to take over the ship management of the latter's owned and managed fleet of dry bulk, container and multipurpose vessels.The new company is to be called Thome Shipmanagement Germany GmbH & Co. Singapore Considering Financial Aid to Marine Sector

Singapore's minister of trade and industry S. Iswaran said the government is working in consultation with the marine and offshore engineering sectors, plus the region’s financial institutions, to review the possible need for measures to help them recover from the economic downturn prolonged by the recent slump in oil prices. Government-backed loans are already provided which help small businesses deal with cash flow issues but the offshore sector has been particularly hard hit by the recession with thousands of job losses.

Mothballed Vessels SE Asia Reflect Oil Slump Pain

Around 1,300 offshore support vessels lying idle worldwide. Not everyone in shipping is bemoaning the industry's worst crisis in living memory: a cluster of companies that help preserve equipment and provide security for vessels parked around southeast Asia are busier than they have been for years. A popular lay-up anchorage near Indonesia's Batam island, a short hop from Singapore, is growing crowded, and firms such as Ocean Shipcare and Brubay Shipcare are running out of space at another at Brunei Bay, near Labuan, off northern Borneo. "Where do we go next? It's a good question, because we are trying to explore some other areas also," said Kanen Senasendram, base manager at Ocean Shipcare, which operates in Brunei Bay. He says he may need to hire more staff.

Thome Ship Management Selects KVH Media

KVH Media Group, distributor of licensed films to the maritime market, and part of KVH Industries, Inc., has announced an agreement with Thome Ship Management to provide 41 Thome vessels with the MOVIElink service. Part of the Thome Group, Thome Ship Management will initially roll out the MOVIElink service to product tankers and LPG carriers. The MOVIElink service delivers films, including the latest releases, to vessels around the world, contributing to more productive and loyal crews, and assisting shipping companies in complying with the standards and recommendations of MLC-2006. These recommendations include providing regularly replenished film entertainment to crew members.

The Human Element of Ship Management

The best third party ship managers employ technology, good business practices, economies of scale and a customized approach for each client. None of that will succeed without first addressing the human element of the equation. Ship managers Crowley Maritime, Thome and Bibby Ship management companies all manage tonnage for others, in sometimes dissimilar sectors and different regions and world trades. Those differences set the three groups apart in terms of the skill sets necessary to manage different classes and types of ships. What brings them all together is a common belief that the human element of ship management is a critical piece of the equation. As it turns out, it may actually be the most important.

Isle of Man Flag Appoints Raja Ray as BDM, Singapore

The Isle of Man Ship Registry has appointed Captain Raja Ray as business development manager in Singapore. The senior appointment is aimed at strengthening the flag’s position in the growing shipping markets of Asia Pacific. Captain Raja is a senior maritime professional who spent almost 20 years working for American Eagle Tankers (AET) as master and then ashore in Singapore and London in Health, Safety, Security and the Environment (HSSE) positions and also as their Designated Person Ashore (DPA). His most recent posting was Head of AET’s Atlantic fleet in Houston. The Isle of Man registry has contracted him to promote the flag to the industry in Singapore and Asia.

Thome Celebrates 50 Years of Maritime Services

The Thome Group celebrated its 50th anniversary in Copenhagen yesterday, 21st August. The event took place in at the Royal Yacht Club at the waterfront north of Copenhagen with more than 100 shipping dignitaries from the Danish Maritime Cluster attended. In addition to celebrating the Thome Group 50 year company anniversary, the event was also to mark the official opening of Thome Ship Management Denmark office with several Thome Group senior executives attending. The Copenhagen event forms part of the Thome Group global celebrations this year, latest with the Oslo celebration for the Norwegian shipping cluster held last week. In his opening speech, the Chief Executive Officer of Thome Ship Management, Carsten Ostenfeldt, proudly explained Thome’s expansion plan with the Danish setup.

Thome Supports Maritime Information Sharing

The Information Fusion Centre from the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) has expressed its appreciation for Thome’s hospitality after the company hosted a visit by 15 Navy and Coastguard delegates from eight nations as part of the regional maritime information sharing exercise programme for Exercise Bell Buoy. The delegates discussed and shared current security practices within the merchant shipping industry in their respective areas of operations and how these could be applicable to the local context. The Thome Group has announced the appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer, Olav Magnus Nortun, who will take up the position on 1st April, 2015. Mr Nortun, a Norwegian national, brings with him vast experience in the maritime industry, especially in the areas of strategic development and governance of production, knowledge management and systems related to ship classification. Launched in 2005 under THOME’s “Human Element” initiative, the Thome Global Cadet Program has already trained in excess of 1,350 cadets from at least 12 countries in Asia, Europe and the Far East. Currently there are 650 cadets at various stages of training on the program with another 200 due to join soon as deck, engine, electrical or catering cadets.

International ship management company THOME Group has become self-sufficient in recruiting junior officers, the company announced today, saying it managed to fill all of its 2014 junior officer vacancies from within its own pool of trained seafarers developed through an in-house cadet training program. Launched in 2005 under THOME’s “Human Element” initiative, the Thome Global Cadet Program has trained 1,350 cadets from at least 12 countries in Asia, Europe and the Far East. There are currently 650 cadets at various stages of training in the program.
