Knudsen Named Pesident, Rolls-Royce Offshore

Rolls-Royce has appointed John Knudsen as President - Offshore, in its Marine business. Knudsen will transition into his new role through January 2014. Mr. Knudsen is currently President of Bergen Engines AS. He has had a key role in transforming Bergen Engines during the divestment from Rolls-Royce Marine and integrating it into the Tognum Group. Tognum AG is a joint venture of Rolls-Royce and Daimler. John Knudsen joined Rolls-Royce in 2007 and has previously held senior positions in the Norwegian telecom equipment supplier Nera ASA.

MTU Environmental Foundation Offers Grant

Grant from the MTU Environmental Foundation to promote the environmental protection of Lake Constance; Environmental protection a major corporate mission of the Tognum Group. For the fourth time, the MTU Environmental Foundation is inviting tenders for a grant of 20,000 euros for environmental protection projects on Lake Constance. The invitation to tender issued by Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen is addressed to those engaged in specific teaching or training projects or in schemes for renaturation or species conservation to be enacted in the period 2014-15.

Tognum Honors Best Suppliers

Tognum, the propulsion and energy system specialist, has honored its best suppliers for the year 2012 with the Supplier Award in five categories. Jörg Schwitalla, member of the Board of Management responsible for personnel, integrity and operations, and Erik Manning, Head of Purchasing, handed over the awards. For the first time, Tognum presented the Supplier Award to two suppliers from the U.S. The prize in the category of "Most Improved for the Year" was awarded to the American supplier Honeywell International from Torrance in California. The Tognum Group buys turbochargers from them.

Dr. Ulrich Dohle New Head of Tognum

As announced in April, Dr Ulrich Dohle today takes up his new duties as Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Tognum AG. He succeeds Joachim Coers, who has left the company after nine years at his own request. In his new role, Dr Dohle will not only take on the typical duties of a CEO, such as corporate communication and strategy, but will also be responsible for R&D and quality management. In April, the Supervisory Board extended Dr Dohle's contract until December 31, 2015. He has been on the Executive Board of Tognum AG since 2009, previously holding the position of deputy CEO and CTO. One priority of the Executive Board's work will be to expand operations worldwide. At the same time, cooperation with Rolls-Royce and Daimler is to be intensified.

Bergen Engines Becomes New Tognum Subsidiary

As of today, July 1, Norwegian engine manufacturer Bergen Engines AS becomes part of the Tognum Group. Following the acquisition of Tognum AG by the joint venture of Rolls-Royce plc. and Daimler AG, the former Rolls-Royce subsidiary Bergen Engines was merged into the Tognum Group. With that Tognum, the propulsion and power solution specialist, adds medium-speed diesel and gas engines with power outputs up to 10 MW to its engine portfolio. Tognum supplies high-speed diesel and gas engines carrying the MTU brand with power ranges of 75 to 10,000kW and 100-2,150kW respectively.

MTU Expands in India with Engine Test Cell Facility

The Tognum Group company MTU India opened a new engine test cell facility at its MTU India Service Center in Tathawade, Pune (India). The test cell’s dynamometer system is capable of testing all MTU engines up to Series 4000 engines in the range from 300 to 4,300kW, as per MTU test protocol, and for all applications. In February 2010, MTU India opened its new head office for sales and service operations in Pune. The addition of the new engine test cell facility to the MTU India Service Centre brings a new phase in MTU India’s ability to meet its Indian customers’ needs in the region.

Diesel Engine Injection Specialists in J/V

Switzerland's Hoerbiger technology group & Germany's L’ Orange GmbH establish a new company, D'Blue, to serve the Asian market. Hoerbiger and L’Orange GmbH, Stuttgart, a subsidiary of the Tognum Group, are working together to enhance their product portfolio for the equipping of two- and four-stroke engines in the power class of 100 kW per cylinder and higher. Under the name D’Blue, the two companies will be acting as a system supplier for injection and control technology for large engines with compression ignition—e.g. for ships and locomotives. MTU Engines First Choice for Emirates Boatbuilder

MTU distributor Al Masaood and Arabian yacht builder Gulf Craft sign preferred partner agreement. Under the agreement, the Arabian shipyard Gulf Craft will soon offer MTU Series 2000 and 4000 engines in its Majesty Yachts as its primary engine option. The agreement was signed by Gulf Craft and Al Masaood, a Tognum Group distributor for MTU engines in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, at this year’s Dubai International Boat Show. The contract will extend through 2014 and provides more than 50 engines ranging from 8, 10, 12 and 16-cylinder units of Series 2000 to 12-cylinder engines of Series 4000. “This preferred partner agreement will allow us to strengthen our long-standing partnership and significantly expand our market share,” said Tognum Chief Sales Officer Dr. Michael Haidinger.

MTU & Marina Barcelona 92 Sign Megayacht Agreement

MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH & Spanish repair shipyard Marina Barcelona 92 (MB92) agree cooperation on work and refit of MTU  yacht engines. The agreement establishes technical and commercial relationships between both parties to carry out service work and refit on MTU engines installed in yachts visiting MB92. To this end Tognum Group subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen has established an office directly within the shipyard. MB92 is located in the port of Barcelona and is one of the largest shipyards worldwide for the refit, service work and maintenance of super and mega yachts.

Tognum Renames SKL Motor

Tognum equips subsidiary SKL Motor GmbH in Magdeburg for standardized reconditioning of MTU engines & components and renames it MTU Reman Technologies GmbH. The MTU logo is now on the frontage of the main entrance as a sign of a new era in the history of the Magdeburg mechanical engineering operation. It was recently unveiled during a works festival attended by Secretary of State for the Economy of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Michael Richter, and the Mayor of Magdeburg, Dr. Lutz Trümper. Many engines that carry the Tognum brand MTU last for longer than one engine life.

Tognum Starts on Building MTU Poland Facility

Ground-breaking ceremony for MTU-facility in Poland The Tognum Group has begun building its new production facility in Stargard Szczeciński in Poland, where in future Tognum’s subsidiary, MTU Polska, will manufacture components for MTU engines. The new plant is part of the Tognum Group’s global expansion strategy and is due to start production in the second half of 2013. When it becomes fully operational, it will have a workforce of over 200. The new plant is part of the Tognum Group’s global expansion strategy.

Tognum Honors Best Suppliers

This is the seventh year that Tognum has given accolades for outstanding achievements, but the first year in which there have been five categories. The awards were presented by Dr. Ulrich Dohle, Tognum executive board member responsible for Technology & Operations, and Erik Manning, head of purchasing at Tognum, accompanied by the relevant departmental managers. “The Supplier Award is a mark of outstanding achievement and quality,” Dohle emphasized. For the second year in succession, the award for best supplier of finished parts was won by Maschinenfabrik Spaichingen from Baden-Württemberg (Germany). They have been supplying the Tognum Group with control elements for MTU Series 4000 engines for many years.

MTU Series 4000 Marine Engines Selected by Southern Towing

Tognum America Inc., a Tognum Group subsidiary and manufacturer of marine and off-highway engines, will supply twelve MTU Series 4000 diesel engines to power six push boats operated by Southern Towing Company, an established inland waterways barge operator on the Mississippi River system and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. MTU Detroit Diesel Opens in New Orleans

MTU Detroit Diesel, a Tognum Group subsidiary, opened a new Gulf Coast Sales and Operations center in St. Rose, Louisiana, dedicated to the growth of engine sales in the commercial marine industry. The center also houses parts and serves as a logistics hub for MTU’s marine defense customers. MTU to Showcase Tier 4i-Compliant Engines at OTC

The Tognum Group will be showcasing its new-generation, MTU-branded EPA Tier 4i-compliant Series 2000 and Series 4000 diesel engines for oil and gas applications at OTC, the offshore industry trade show taking place May 2-5, 2011 in Houston, Texas (booth 5563). Both engines are able to meet EPA Tier 4 interim emissions requirements solely through the use of in-engine technology. No aftertreatment is necessary. These Tier 4i-compliant engines lay the foundations for the EPA’s Tier 4 final regulations which will apply from 2015.

Dieter Royal New CFO at Tognum

Friedrichshafen, 16 March 2011. The specialist for propulsion and power solutions Tognum decided at the meeting of the Supervisory Board on 14 March 2011, that Dieter Royal (47) will join the Executive Board as the new member responsible for the Finance and Corporate Services Division effective 1 October 2011. Dieter Royal succeeds Joachim Coers (46) as CFO, who replaces Volker Heuer (58) as CEO of the Tognum Group as of 1 October 2011. As announced in April of last year, Volker Heuer will then terminate his contract and go into retirement.

MTU Upgrades Series 1163 for IMO Standards

Tognum Group Brand MTU has announced that it will update its Series 1163 marine engines for IMO 2 and IMO 3 emissions regulations. While more and more vessel manufacturing is shifted to shipyards in Asia, this will not only contribute to a more environmentally friendly Asian coastline, but also empower Asia to supply more vessels with both powerful and clean marine engines to the world. The upgrade further demonstrates MTU’s commitment to providing customers with the perfect engine choice for upcoming project designs.

MTU Detroit Diesel Changes Name to Tognum America

MTU Detroit Diesel Inc. announced a name change to Tognum America Inc., effective June 1, 2011. Tognum America, like MTU Detroit Diesel before, is a subsidiary of the Germany-based Tognum Group and is responsible for the sales and service of MTU engines and MTU Onsite Energy distributed energy systems in North and Latin America. Tognum America has offices in Detroit, Houston, Washington DC, San Leandro, CA; St. Rose, LA; Miami, FL and Mankato, MN. The company also operates two state-of-the-art production facilities: one in Mankato, MN for diesel and gas-based generator sets and one in Aiken, SC where it currently machines parts and builds MTU Series 2000 and 4000 engines.

Tognum Inaugurates New Research Facility

Tognum is conducting research on diesel and gas engines of the future at its `SKL Motor´ subsidiary in Magdeburg. Saxony-Anhalt‘s Minister-President Dr. Reiner Haseloff presided over a symbolic ceremony at which four new single-cylinder test stands went into operation. The facilities will be used by the company’s specialists to develop new combustion processes, fuels and combustion chamber geometries for the development of engines at the Friedrichshafen location of the Tognum brand MTU.

MTU, Navantia Ink Cooperation Agreement

MTU Friedrichshafen and the Spanish shipbuilder Navantia signed a strategic long-term cooperation agreement that extends the existing cooperation, enhancing the long-term relationship that both companies have had during the last 40 years. Navantia chooses the Tognum Group company MTU Friedrichshafen as a primary partner for its ships’ propulsion systems. In addition to the existing license agreements for the commercialization and manufacturing of MTU Series 396, Series 956 and Series 1163 marine engines a common training center is to be established.

Marine Diesel Engine Builder to Manufacture in Poland

The Tognum Group is to erect a new plant in Poland to expand its European production and development capacity. The specialist for propulsion and power solutions is to invest over €90 million in the new site close to the City of Stargard Szczeciński in North-West Poland. The plant is to start producing the first components for Tognum’s MTU brand engines as of 2013. In addition to production, facilities will be set up for the development of mechanical and electronic engine components in Poland. Tognum is also to make investments of a similar magnitude in its lead plant in Friedrichshafen. From the middle of 2013, production output from the future plant in Stargard Szczeciński will primarily include crankcases…

Tognum Honors Founder Karl Maybach

The 6th of February 2010 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Karl Maybach, founder, director, partner and for many years technical mastermind behind what is today MTU Friedrichshafen, the core company of the Tognum Group. He died on Feb. 6 1960 in Friedrichshafen. Karl Maybach was born on July 6 1879 in Cologne-Deutz. On March 23, 1909, he founded, along with his father Wilhelm and Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, Luftfahrzeug-Motorenbau GmbH, from which the company MTU Friedrichshafen originates. Maybach remained a partner throughout his life and was managing director until 1952.
