Making the Case for LPG as a Marine Fuel

The sulfur emission control areas (SECAs) in place in North-America and Northern Europe, in combination with the upcoming global 0.5% limit on sulfur in 2020 (or 2025) and similar EU limits in 2020, call for alternative fuels as a means for compliance. MAN, CSIC Extend Two-stroke Agreement

MAN Diesel & Turbo renewed its contract with Chinese two-stroke licensee, China Shipbuilding Industry Corp. (CSIC). Signed at a ceremony in Beijing on February 3, 2015, the agreement runs for the next 10 years and covers the production of low-speed engines at CSIC affiliates: Dalian Marine Diesel Co., Ltd (DMD), Yichang Marine Diesel Engine Co., Ltd (YMD), Qingdao Haixi Marine Diesel Co., Ltd (QMD). MAN Diesel & Turbo Extends CSSC Relationship

MAN Diesel & Turbo renewed its contract with Chinese two-stroke licensee, China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) at a ceremony in Beijing on February 2, 2015. The agreement runs for the next 10 years and covers the production of low-speed engines at CSSC affiliates: CSSC – MES Diesel Co., Ltd (CMD), Hudong Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd (HHM) and CSSC Marine Power Co., Ltd (CMP). Japan Warms to ME-GI Concept

One of MAN Diesel & Turbo’s oldest licensees held a successful demonstration of the ME-GI concept on April 17, 2013 at its Tamano works. A large crowd of guests attended the demonstration and the following reception where, among others, MAN Diesel & Turbo’s Dr. René Umlauft, CEO, and Thomas Knudsen, Head of the Low Speed business unit, held commemorative speeches. In his speech, Dr. Umlauft described the ME-GI engine as representing a milestone in a shipping era where stricter emission regulations and rising fuel costs are calling for environmentally friendly and economic solutions.

Maersk Line wins 'Shipping Line of the Year' title at Supply Chain Asia (SCA) Logistics Awards 2012 in Singapore. The company was judged best in class among operators in the region – beating other finalists that included APL, Cosco, Hanjin, and Yang Ming. John Corris, Head of Regional Key Client Management, accepted the trophy from SCA on behalf of Maersk Line Asia Pacific Chief Executive Thomas Knudsen. “It is an honour for Maersk Line to win such an award. 100 Years With Diesel - Successor Ready

Exactly 100 years ago, the Danish ship Selandia set an example for international shipping as a pioneer within CO2 reduction. Now we are ready for yet another environmental quantum leap. The most distinctive feature of the M/S Selandia was the fact that it had no funnel emitting black smoke up into the sky. The M/S Selandia marked the beginning of the end of steamships. As the first ocean-going ship, she sailed on diesel instead of coal. A technological revolution built at the B&W shipyard. And at the same time, a major gain for the environment.

EMC Agreement Caps Hjejlen’s 150th Jubilee

MAN Diesel & Turbo returned to its roots recently when it signed an EMC (Engine Management Concept) contract covering one of Denmark’s most famous vessels. maintenance and upkeep of the steam engine that has powered the 150-year-old paddle  steamer Hjejlen (The Golden Plover) on the Silkeborg Lakes in central Jutland, Denmark since its launch. The Engine Management Concept is less a contract and more a partnership with much emphasis placed on building a long-term relationship with customers.

MAN B&W Engine Retrofits Meet IMO Legislation

While IMO guidelines are observed on a voluntary basis by the international shipping community, their adoption becomes mandatory for certain vessels when an Approved Method for complying with the regulations is available. MAN Diesel & Turbo has developed Approved Methods for a number of its engines, requiring some shipowners to retrofit engines to follow IMO emission limits. The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) develops regulations and guidelines for international shipping. Its latest revision of emission regulations addresses NOx emissions on engines installed aboard ships built between 1990 – 1999 that are expected to be active in the global fleet for another 10 or 20 years, but that were not previously covered by any guidelines.
