AMO Support Senator's Quest for Cruise Ship Information

The American Maritime Officers Association (AMO) supports Senator Rockefeller's approach to the Cruise Lines International Association. AMO Responds to Cruise Line Industry Criticisms

American Maritime Officers Association (AMO) president follows up on his recent appearance on FOX News Channel. The AMO president says his April 15 live appearance on FOX News Channel's segment, "Remembering Titanic 101 years Ago Today," which highlighted concerns about the rising tide of marine mishaps, has drawn undue criticism from the cruise ship industry's lobbying group, yet, has ignited overwhelming positive public and professional support of putting highly-trained AMO-member U.S. merchant mariners in command of more passenger vacation vessels. A few days after American Maritime Officers President Tom Bethel appeared on "FOX & Friends," the Cruise Lines International Association issued a news release in the form of an open letter from CEO Christine Duffy to Mr. Bethel.

Seafarers & Int'l House Awards Banquet

On Thursday evening, April 22, 2010, Seafarers & International House will hold its annual awards banquet, “Setting the Course,” at the New York Athletic Club for the purpose of honoring Donald Keefe, President of Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association, Philip J. Schapiro, President & CEO of Liberty Maritime Corporation and Joseph C. Sweeney, Distinguished Professor of Law at Fordham University School of Law. Seafarers & International House is a Lutheran mission serving seafarers and sojourners. Its 84-room guesthouse at 123 East 15th Street in Manhattan, once one of several seafarer hotels, is now utilized to accommodate a greater variety of travelers, including domestic violence victims, refugees, asylum seekers, as well as the reduced number of seafarers requiring accommodations.

Shell to Sign Agreement with AMO

On April 30, Richard Mellor, General Manager for Ship Management, Shell Trading  will sign a historic crewing agreement with Tom Bethel, National President American Maritime Officers union (AMO).  Under the terms of the agreement, Shell will immediately begin to hire citizen officers to crew its 25 new Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) vessels.  The signing will take place at the U.S. Department of Transportation.  Maritime Administrator Sean T. Connaughton was instrumental in brokering this agreement between Shell and AMO.
