U.S. Coast Guard Hosts Spill Seminar

The U.S. Coast Guard hosted the 2013 Spill of National Significance Executive Seminar at its headquarters Monday. As a follow up and identified best practice to the 2012 Spill of National Significance (SONS) Executive Seminar, the Coast Guard hosted the 2013 Executive Seminar to explore national level policy issues associated with Arctic spill response and to exercise national-level coordination of Senior Officials during an Arctic SONS. Over 75 senior government officials and advisors representing over 20 federal agencies and departments participated in this year’s SONS capstone event.

Upcoming NAMEPA Arctic Drilling Preparedness Round Table

With an eye to future resource extraction in Alaskan waters, Clay Maitland, Founding Chairman of the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA), has announced the program for its Environmental Intelligence in Maritime Senior Leadership Roundtable. The Leadership Roundtable will be held in Anchorage, Alaska on August 8th, 2013, at the Captain Cook Hotel. The caucus will begin at 1:30PM with a keynote delivered by Congressman Don Young and will focus on “Drilling Preparedness in the Arctic”. Recent attempts to proceed with drilling in the Arctic have been met with challenges. Federal agencies, as well as private industry, have been working to better understand and meet these challenges.

The Arctic: NAMEPA Addresses Enviro Issues

NAMEPA’s Environmental Intelligence in Maritime seminar held yesterday in Anchorage, Alaska was the forum for an examination of regulations surrounding resource extraction, and the readiness of response organizations and the government to address environmental challenges posed by this activity in Arctic regions. RADM Tom Ostebo, USCG District 17 Commander was joined by Marilyn Crockett of Alaska Oil and Gas Association, Mark Myers of the University of Alaska, Cam Toohey of Shell Oil Company, Larry Cotter of APICDA, RADM Duncan Smith of Blank Rome, Charles Parks of Tesoro and Ian Dutton of Alaska SeaLife Center. NAMEPA’s Founding Chairman, Clay Maitland, used the forum to issue a call for recognition of the critical opportunity presented by the Arctic, and the risks involved.

NAMEPA to Host "Resources and Readiness in Alaska" Seminar

District 17 Commander RADM Tom Ostebo will be a keynote speaker at a “Resources and Readiness in Alaska” seminar to be presented by the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) on August 18th in Anchorage at the Captain Cook. The seminar is part of NAMEPA’s Environmental Intelligence in Maritime Seminar series and will begin at 1:00PM with an introduction by NAMEPA Founding Chairman Clay Maitland. “NAMEPA is keenly interested in the readiness of industry to protect natural resources as resource extraction moves into sensitive and challenging areas,” stated Maitland. “We believe the companies and organizations involved in this extraction need to adequately protect the environment, particularly as the difficulty mounts.
