Brunvoll has been contracted to deliver the propulsion, maneuvering and autonomy systems for two hydrogen powered ferries for Torghatten Nord AS.The ferries will operate the harsh route to and from Lofoten in Norway, the Bodø-Verøy-Røst-Moskenes route. The hydrogen fuel cell ferries were designed by The Norwegian Ship Design Company AS. Both ferries included in the contract will be delivered from Myklebust Yard in 2026.The Brunvoll contract includes two azimuth propulsion thrusters, BruCon Propulsion & Thruster Control System, BruCon Auto-Crossing system and BruCon Condition Monitoring System.

As part of the validation of Maritime Partners, LLC’s M/V Hydrogen One inland pushboat, hydrogen fuel cell supplier PowerCell Group and methanol-to-hydrogen technology pioneer e1 Marine in partnership with RIX Industries have conducted a successful string test of their respective technologies for a 200kW propulsion chain. This chain can be multiplied and scaled to a megawatt level.The result of the test proves the viability of a unique concept that takes methanol fuel and converts it to hydrogen onboard ships before using the hydrogen in a fuel cell to generate power cleanly and efficiently.

Hydrogen fuel cell supplier PowerCell announced it has signed an agreement to deliver hydrogen fuel cells to two ships operating on Norway's longest ferry route. The order has a value of €19.2 million, and represents the largest non-combustion fuel propulsion project to date in the global marine industry, the company said.PowerCell will work to deliver the solution with Norwegian systems developer and integrator of low- and zero-emission marine solutions SEAM, who will be responsible for the electrical installations on the ferries. Final delivery is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2024.

Sweden-based PowerCell said it has signed a letter of intent to negotiate final terms concerning one of the marine industry’s largest hydrogen fuel cell projects. Headed by Norwegian electrical integrator SEAM, the project comprises a pair of hydrogen fuel cell powered ferries for passenger and cargo transport in northern Norway, scheduled to enter service in 2025.Torghatten Nord in January 2022 won a contract from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration for operation of the ferry routes crossing the Vestfjord between the Lofoten Islands and Bodø in northern Norway.

Turkey's Cemre Shipyard said it has won a contract from Torghatten Nord AS to build a new double ended Ro-Ro passenger and vehicle ferry for the Norwegian operator.Developed by The Norwegian Ship Design Company, the 117-meter-long double-ended car and passenger ferry with the designation NSD120CFc will normally operate emissions-free in exposed waters on the entire 1-hour transit of the Bognes – Lødingen route in the Northern part of Norway at a speed of 13-14 knots. The port of Ferrol hosted its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation recently which saw two ferries filled with LNG by Repsol in the port’s Mugardos terminal.Recently built by Turkish shipyard Tersan, the Samnøy and Huftarøy ferries received 178 cubic metres of fuel from five tanks in total. The Samnøy received about 110 cubic metres of fuel, whereas the Huftarøy was supplied with 68 cubic metres.The two operations were carried out on the outer jetty, which is the dock of the inner dock where small and medium-sized cruise ships usually dock when they visit the city.They were on their way to the Norwegian fjords, where they will be exploited in passenger services by the Torghatten Nord shipping company.

Rolls-Royce said it has signed a deal to supply 15 gas engines to Norwegian Ferry Company, Torghatten Nord AS. The engines will power five Multi Maritime designed LNG ferries operating between Bergen and Stord. Kjell Harloff, Rolls-Royce, Vice President, Engines – Marine, said, “Since the introduction of our first marine gas engines 10 years ago, Rolls-Royce has delivered more than 700 gas engines on land and at sea accumulating over 25 million running hours of operating experience. All 15 engines are C26:33L9AGs, a generating set with nine cylinders in-line.

Schottel has been selected to fit eight newly-built ferries with the new Schottel Rudder EcoPeller (SRE, EcoPeller) for two of Norway’s leading ferry lines. In close cooperation with the customers and Multi Maritime, the Norwegian ship designer in charge of the projects, the EcoPeller was chosen for three Fjord1 ferries with 2xSRE 340 CP each and five Torghatten ferries with 5x2 SRE 560 CP. “Our new ferry designs are the result of continuous efficiency optimization. Every potential efficiency increase and every optimization of the energy consumption in terms of design, components and equipment has been exploited. The EcoPeller was chosen because we expect that it fully supports our targets,” said Gjermund Johannessen, CEO at Multi Maritime.

MAN Cryo, MAN Diesel & Turbo’s marine-LNG fuel-gas-system manufacturer, has signed a contract with the Vard Shipyard Group in Norway to deliver a fuel-gas supply system (FGSS) to two ferries for shipowner and ferry operator Torghatten Nord. Each ferry will be equipped with a gas-electric, hybrid-propulsion system that features optional fast-charging from shore. Major efforts have been put into the design to deliver an energy-efficient propulsion and hull shape that offer a state-of-the-art environmental performance, comfort and reliability.

Vard Holdings Limited (“VARD”)secured contracts for the construction of two LNG powered car- and passenger ferries for Torghatten Nord in Norway. The total contract value amounts to approximately NOK 600 million. The new car- and passenger ferries are designed for environmentally friendly operations in the Norwegian fjords, with a total capacity that is able to accommodate up to 180 cars and 550 passengers and crew. The ferries of Multi Maritime MM 125FD design will measure 130 meters in length with a beam of 20.7 meters, and will have a speed of approximately 18 knots. Four new LNG-powered RoPax ferries, destined for service in the Norwegian fjords, will feature a suite of MacGregor RoRo access equipment from Cargotec. In November Cargotec secured an order from Gdansk Shiprepair Yard Remontowa in Poland to deliver MacGregor cargo access equipment for four 4,200gt RoPax ferries. “Efficient and reliable cargo access equipment is essential for the profitable and safe operation of the ferries,” says Lars Öberg, Sales Manager for RoRo ships at Cargotec. “Cargotec has a long experience in providing innovative solutions based on proven technology.

Barents NaturGass AS reportedly won a contract to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Torghatten Nord AS for seven new LNG ferries in one of Norway’s busiest waterways, according to a report on www.ngvglobal.com. The contract takes into consideration the full environmental profile of fuel supply and stipulates that trucks delivering fuel to depots must also be LNG-powered. Torghatten Nord signed the largest ferry contract in Norway, to a value of $238m, for ferry traffic across the Western area for 10 years from 2013. The contract requires the construction of four new LNG-powered ferries as well as the conversion of three existing vessels. The first ferry comes in the second quarter of 2012.
