ClassNK issued an Approval in Principle (AiP) to Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” LINE) and Shin Kurushima Dockyard Co. Ltd. for the jointly developed design of an ammonia-fueled Pure Car Carrier (PCC).Ammonia is attracting much attention as a 'fuel of the future' in the maritime sector, expected to be used as decarbonized fuel for ships since it does not emit CO2 when burned. However, ammonia is toxic to humans and corrosive to materials, and the rules on its use as a ship fuel are yet to be developed.

Hiroaki Sakashita has been appointed as President & CEO as well as a Representative Director of classification society ClassNK, effective March 18, 2020. Current Senior Executive Vice Presidents Tetsuya Kinoshita, Junichiro Iida, and Dr. Toshiyuki Shigemi will continue in their present roles on the team, joined by Hirofumi Takano and Taira Narisawa as Executive Vice President.Koichi Fujiwara has been appointed as Chairman of the Board of Directors, leaving the post of Representative Director, President & CEO.

Shigemi Named Executive VP at ClassNK

Dr. Toshiyuki Shigemi has been appointed as Executive Vice President as well as Executive Director of ClassNK, effective March 7, 2016. Yasushi Nakamura has stepped down as Senior Executive Vice President, and has been appointed as an Advisor to the Society. Dr. Shigemi joined ClassNK in 1981. After a career including roles in plan approval, ClassNK’s research institute, and on-site surveys, he took up the position of General Manager of the Development Department in 2008, where he was responsible for overseeing ClassNK’s rule development activities for over one decade…

New Ship Noise, Vibration Guidelines from ClassNK

ClassNK released its new Noise and Vibration Guideline for measuring and evaluating the noise and vibration on ships. The new Guideline address the growing demand for new standards for noise and vibration on commercial vessels and provides detailed requirements for measuring and evaluating noise and vibrations in crew accommodations and machinery rooms, as well as establishes new notations for ships that comply with the new requirements. The new guideline is divided into two parts: Part A, which covers noise and vibration measurement criteria for accommodation spaces in line with IMO Resolution A.468 (XII), ISO 2923:1996 and ISO 6954:2000; and Part B, which covers vibration measurement criteria for rotating machinery and reciprocating machinery in line with ISO 10816.

ClassNK Establishes New Standards for FLNG/FLPG Sector

April 28 (Tokyo) - Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) is pleased to announce the publication of its new Guidelines for Floating Offshore Facilities for LNG/LPG Production, Storage and Offloading. The new guidelines address the wide variety of construction and survey requirements for FLNG and FLPG facilities including LNG/LPG Floating Production, Storage and Offloading facilities (FPSO), Floating Production and Offloading facilities (FPO), and Floating Storage and Offloading facilities (FSO).
