Orient Overseas Back to Black

Orient Overseas International (OOI) has announced a profit attributable to equity holders for 2017 of US$137.7 million, compared to a loss of US$219.2 million in 2016. Earnings per ordinary share in 2017 was US22.0 cents, whereas loss per ordinary share in 2016 was US35.0 cents. The Chairman of OOIL, C C Tung, said, “The economic backdrop for 2017 was more robust than forecasters had expected. Following a decade of low growth, we saw healthier performance in both GDP and trade volumes across most of the world’s major economies. “This synchronicity of growth, a rare phenomenon in recent memory, may bode well for the sustainability of the recovery,” noted Tung. “However, growth on the supply side continues across the trade lanes.

SCANIA Expands its Engine Range for Marine Applications

TOS Ship Delivery “Project Cargo” to South-America

A special ship delivery project left TOS’ homeport of Waalhaven in Rotterdam as a German coaster and a Belgian inland pusher guided "Project Cargo" for its delivery destination in South-America, a voyage that will last approximately four weeks. Van der Kolk said, “This job combines our services in the field of Ship Management, Ship Delivery and Crewing together and fits us like a glove. Even for TOS a Project Cargo ship delivery is a challenging job. First of all TOS picked up a coaster for the client in Papenburg (Germany). The TOS crew started up the vessel from dead ship.

Commissioner Doyle: China Clarifies VAT

Last week Commissioner William P. Doyle of the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) briefed the full Commission with a report on his work seeking clarity and certainty on the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC’s) implementation of the Value Added Tax (VAT) as it relates to maritime commerce. Doyle informed the Commission that the Chinese government was expected to clarify its position on the VAT that has confused the shipper and carrier communities. On December 13, 2013, the PRC released Circular 106, which supersedes Circular 37 effective January 1, 2014.

Bollinger Delivers 55,000 Barrel OPA'90 Tank Barget To Bouchard. Bollinger Marine Fabricators, L.L.C., Amelia, La., a Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. company, has delivered the B. No. 250, a newly designed and constructed 55,000 barrel OPA’90 compliant tank barge to Bouchard Transportation Co., Inc., Melville, NY. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The announcement was made by Bollinger executive vice president of new construction, Chris Bollinger, “We are very pleased to announce the OPA’90 tank barge, B. No. 250, as another successful delivery to the Bouchard family.

Wärtsilä Launches Environmental Services

Wärtsilä has introduced a new portfolio of services, Environmental Services, to both the marine and energy market. Environmental Services will help customers to minimize emissions into the air and water, and help them to meet increasingly stringent legislation and regulations. The new portfolio includes a range of products, solutions and services aimed at both land-based power plants and ship installations. As part of the portfolio, Wärtsilä offers catalysts (SCR) that treat nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, while scrubbers are offered for removing sulphur oxides (SOx). Both are harmful emissions that have detrimental effects on humans and nature. Wärtsilä can also offer complete oily water treatment systems for power plants and marine applications that meet the most stringent standards.

Wärtsilä Signs Ship Overhaul Contract

Wärtsilä signed in December a $13m contract with Norwegian ferry operator New Kystlink AS for an overhaul project of Kystlink's Pride of Telemark ferry. This contract emphasizes Wärtsilä's strength to be the total service provider. The scope of the project includes a complete electrical system installation, the removal and major overhauling of five of the ship's auxiliary engines, the onboard overhauling of two more main engines, as well as the renewal of 31 cabin interiors. The work is scheduled to last for 18 working weeks and is expected to be completed during the spring of 2008. The Pride of Telemark was built in 1983 and acquired by New Kystlink AS in 2005. The ferry sails between Norway, Denmark and Sweden, and carries 2000 passengers plus cars and trailers.

Bollinger Delivers Barge, Retrofit Tug

Lockport, La.-based Bollinger Shipyards Inc. announced it has completed the new construction of the second of two 80,000 barrel tank barges and the conversion of a tug for Melville, NY-based Bouchard Coastwise Management Corp. The tank barge is a 399-ft. manned ocean, clean oil barge built to meet the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 standards. The barge has 12 cargo compartments and three separate pumping stations. The 112-foot Ellen S. Bouchard tug was also retrofitted with an Intercon C coupler system, generator upgrades and regulatory re-certification. Bollinger is also working on a 35,000-barrel and 60,000-barrel tank barge for Bouchard. Bouchard is a total-service oil barging company with 28 barges ranging from 25,000 barrels to 252,000 barrel-capacities.

Wärtsilä and Volvo Penta to Collaborate

Wärtsilä will start servicing and selling large Volvo Penta engines for commercial shipping applications, initially in selected markets and later globally. Volvo Penta has broadened its engine range to cover commercial vessels and the company now offers engines for increasingly large vessels for both main engine and auxiliary engine duties. The largest engines have outputs of 2,000 horsepower (1,470 kW). Wärtsilä marine engines are considerably larger than these, the largest having outputs of 108,920 horsepower (80,080 kW) . Wärtsilä is the world's leading supplier of ship power and propulsion systems. The respective product ranges of the two companies complement each other very well.

Wärtsilä Reports 1Q Results

Wärtsilä's reported that net sales for the first quarter increased 17 percent to EUR 580.9 (497.4) million, despite a weakening of the global marine market and nearly non-existent containership business. CadCam Report

The Peene-Werft in Wolgast, Germany, has chosen Nupas-Cadmatic software solution as their main CAD/CAE/CAM system. During an implementation project of about two months, the shipyard will implement Nupas-Cadmatic for the complete Hull structure, Piping, Machinery and Outfitting including special customizations for the yard's high-tech production facilities like profile cutting robots, automated pipe workshop, web panels and their in-house material management system. The first project - building the first of a series of heavy cargo vessels - commenced in the beginning of February 2000. A group of about 20 engineers have been trained in several disciplines of the Nupas-Cadmatic system.

Wärtsilä Acquires Business of Singaporean Total Automation

Wärtsilä Corporation acquires the entire business of Total Automation Ltd, a Singapore-based public marine automation company, and all Total Automation's shares in its subsidiaries at a price of approximately EUR 61.6 million. Total Automation had sales of EUR 38.5 million in 2004 and has consistently generated EBIT margins in excess of 15%. In addition to general marine automation, Total Automation has a strong foothold within the offshore and LNG sectors. The company focuses on refit projects and service work. The customers are multinational companies, shipyards and ship owners. The transaction complements Wärtsilä's earlier electrical and automation acquisitions in Europe and North America.

Wärtsilä Boosts Service with Gerhardt Acquisition

Wärtsilä signed an agreement to acquire the assets of Gerhardt Holding Co., Inc. The company specializes in the servicing of control and automation equipment for gas and diesel engines and steam turbines. The operations to be acquired have annual net sales totaling approximately $28.6 million and 128 employees. The purchase price is $10 million. Acquisition is part of Wärtsilä's growth strategy in Service. The family-owned company is headquartered in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Gerhardt Holding Co. Inc. offers control and automation equipment service for both marine and land-based installations. The company is strongly positioned regionally in the Gulf of Mexico and on the east and west coasts of the U.S.

Wärtsilä Acquires JMC Marine

Wärtsilä has signed a letter of intent to acquire a Danish propulsion system service company JMC Marine A/S. The company, which employs 28 people, specializes on propulsion system maintenance based on laser measuring technology and has a $3.5 Million turnover. "This acquisition will further strengthen Wärtsilä's total service offerings. Our aim is to provide as broad a spectrum as possible of tailored solutions and expertise know-how covering every aspect of operation and maintenance. The know-how developed by JMC Marine speeds up and improves customer service", says Tage Blomberg, Group vice president and Head of the Service division. The acquired business will be named Ciserv Denmark and it will concentrate on service for propulsion systems and engine repair.
