MARAD to Fund Study on LNG Conversions

The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) announced it has entered a $900,000 cooperative agreement with Totem Ocean Trailer Express Inc. (TOTE) to study the costs and benefits of converting vessel to liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion. Keppel Shipyard Wins FPSO Conversion Contract

Even as world energy prices continue to maintain low pricing levels, offshore contracts are there to be won. Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd has secured a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) conversion contract as well as three repair, upgrade and modification contracts worth a total of about S$125 million. The FPSO conversion project Keppel Shipyard will be undertaking is for Armada Madura EPC Limited, a joint venture between long-standing customer Bumi Armada Berhad (Bumi Armada) and Shapoorji Pallonji Group (Shapoorji Pallonji). "This is our third conversion/upgrading project for the joint venture," said Michael Chia, Managing Director (Marine & Technology), Keppel O&M.

Totem Terminal Named in Memory of Robert Magee

Legendary maritime and Pierce County community leader, Robert P. Magee, was honored September 21, 2011 with the naming of Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc’s Tacoma terminal in his memory. The Robert P. Magee Terminal dedication ceremony at Port of Tacoma was attended by about 150 industry and community leaders, extended family members, TOTE customers and employees who gathered to pay tribute to a man many described as visionary. After Bob’s death in November 2009, TOTE employees rallied around the idea of honoring Bob’s memory with a tribute.

Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc. Names Tacoma Terminal In Memory of Legendary Leader. Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc.’s (TOTE) Tacoma Terminal has been named the Robert P. Magee Marine Terminal in memory of and tribute to TOTE’s legendary leader. The new name is proudly displayed on signs at each gated entrance to the terminal, as well as in front of the administration building. A formal dedication ceremony will take place on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at the TOTE Terminal at the Port of Tacoma. Bob Magee began working for TOTE in May 1986 as Vice President of Marine Operations.

Transport Secretary LaHood Names Maritime Industry Advisory Panel

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood today announced the appointment of 29 members to the new Marine Transportation System National Advisory Council (MTSNAC), established to advise the Department on matters relating to marine transportation. “Shifting some of our freight from the highways to open inland waterways is a fuel-efficient, cost-effective way to move goods and reduce roadway congestion,” said Secretary LaHood. The Department will task the MTSNAC with developing recommendations on establishing new marine highway services and port infrastructure development, among other issues. “The experience brought to bear by this diverse panel is impressive,” said Maritime Administrator David Matsuda. “These maritime experts have a lot to contribute.

Short-sea shipping, also referred to as the “Marine Highway” and, in some cases, “coastal shipping,” is the subject of more studies than we can list. Whatever the label, the concept refers to an initiative to get freight off our roadways, which are at capacity, and onto our waterways, which have to yet to be tapped to their potential. More than likely you’ve heard about the promises of this mode of transport, including reduced highway congestion, reduced consumption of fuel and fewer emissions per unit shipped. Parrott Named New TOTE President

Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc. (TOTE) announced the promotion of John D. Parrott to company president. Parrott replaces TOTE’s former president, Bill Deaver, who had been with the company since March 2002. John initially worked for TOTE beginning in1992 as First Officer of the S.S. Northern Lights. He was present throughout the shipyard conversion of that vessel, including the addition of a ninety-foot mid-body section, until it was brought into service in 1993. TOTE Ships to Reduce Emissions by 90%

Nearly $1.5m in grant money recently awarded to the Port of Tacoma will empower Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc. (TOTE) to reduce the particulate matter and greenhouse gas emissions of its two Orca Class vessels by an estimated 90 percent while at TOTE’s Tacoma terminal. The emissions reduction will be the end result of the Port of Tacoma adding 600,000 volt electrical maritime power at the terminal and TOTE retrofitting both vessels with electrical power plug-ins. This will allow the ships to turn their engines off while docked, eliminating at-berth diesel idling. Each vessel calls on the Port of Tacoma one time per week for about 12 hours.

TOTE Earns OHSAS Certification

Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc., (TOTE), a shipping company operating roll-on/roll-off cargo vessels between the Ports of Tacoma, Wash., and Anchorage, Alaska, announced its completion in April of the Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) 18001:2007 certification process for safety standards. TOTE was certified to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001:2004 standard for environmental practices in 2007. The OHSAS 18001 implementation was done in coordination with 14001 as a health, safety and environmental (HSE) program. TOTE has retained an ISO certification for quality management systems (9000 series) since 1998. To achieve those targets, TOTE enacted numerous practices, including a safety orientation for all employees and new employees.

RoRo Carrier Fires Warning Shots

MANAMA, Bahrain - While transiting north in international waters in the Central Arabian Gulf April 24 at approximately 8 a.m. local time, Motor Vessel Westward Venture was approached by two unidentified small boats. Following proper procedure, Westward Venture issued standard queries to the small boats via bridge-to-bridge radio, but received no response. Westward Venture then activated a flare, which also did not receive a response. The small boats continued toward Westward Venture and the ship's embarked security team fired warning shots. The small boats left the area. A short time later, Westward Venture received a query from a unit identifying itself as Iranian Coast Guard. It is not clear if this was one of the small boats or a separate boat. The query was routine and correct.

NASSCO Taps H&W For Tanker Work

Harland and Wolff Technical Services Limited, the design engineering consultancy of Harland and Wolff Group PLC, has won additional major contracts from the NASSCO. The Company has been contracted to provide both Detail Modelling and Production Information within the Cargo Zone areas for a series of newbuild Alaska-class tankers to be built for BP. NASSCO Delivers M.V. North Star

of General Dynamics, has delivered the M. V. North Star to Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc. (TOTE). The North Star is the second of two new Orca-class trailerships built by NASSCO for TOTE’s service from Tacoma, Wash., to Anchorage, Alaska. Her sister ship, the M. V. Midnight Sun, was delivered to TOTE in April. highway trailers as large as 53 feet in length. Cargo decks total 360,000 square feet and are able to carry up to 600 cargo trailers and 220 autos as well as oversized freight.

Midnight Sun, the first commercial dry cargo vessel to be built in the United States in 10 years. The Midnight Sun is the first of two new Orca-class trailerships being built by NASSCO for TOTE's service from Tacoma, Washington, to Anchorage, Alaska. The Midnight Sun is the first of two new Orca-class trailerships being built by NASSCO for TOTE's service from Tacoma, Wash., to Anchorage, Alaska. It and its sister ship, MV North Star, are 840 x 118-ft. (256 x 35.9-m), RoRo cargo ships offering the option to carry trailers as large as 53 ft. in length. The ships' cargo can be loaded and discharged in nine hours, with the speed and efficiency of this process being an important competitive advantage for TOTE.

Company: Waterweights Makes Light Work of Heavy Lifts

The Water Weights division of Imes Inc., under contract with NASSCO (National Steel And Shipbuilding Co.) and in partnership with JW Automarine recently achieved a first in the innovative use of Air Lift Bags to assist in float-out of a vessel from dry-dock. The project was also the largest lift achieved by JW Automarine using this type of bag. NASSCO of San Diego has been designing and building ships since 1960, specializing in auxiliary and support ships for the U.S. Navy as well as oil tankers and dry cargo carriers for commercial markets. Alstom Receives Order for Ship Sets

National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO), a subsidiary of General Dynamics, has selected Alstom to supply the complete power package for two ship sets for Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc. For each ship set, Alstom will provide two 19.75 MW electric motor controllers, the switchgear, transformers and control system. The value of the contract is $24 million, and the first ship set is to be delivered to the shipyard early in 2001.

Vessel’s Support Illustrates Importance

The military value of a strong and diverse fleet of U.S.-flag commercial vessels was dramatically illustrated this month when the Military Sealift Command requested that the Jones Act trailership S.S. NORTHERN LIGHTS load military hardware in San Diego for delivery to Southwest Asia in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
