New Coal Carrier Enters Domestic Coastal Service for JERA

On July 31, the coal carrier Ushio, which NYK had ordered from Honda Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. was delivered at the Saiki Shipyard. A naming ceremony was attended by Masato Mizutani, executive officer, head of fuel operation management group of JERA Co., Inc.; Nobuhiro Kashima, managing executive officer of NYK; and a number of related parties.This vessel is the NYK Group’s first coal carrier for domestic coastal transport by JERA. The ship will be operated by the NYK Group's Asia Pacific Marine Corporation based on a transportation contract between JERA and NYK.

KSS Line Orders 5th VLGC at HHI

South Korean shipping company KSS Line placed an order for the construction of a new class 84,000 cbm Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) at compatriot Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI).According to a statement from the marine transportation business company, this is the fifth VLGC order at the yard. All five VLGCs are scheduled for delivery in 2021."In 2021, when five new VLGCs, including the new vessels, are delivered, sales are expected to exceed KRW 300 billion and continue to grow," it said.The fifth VLGC new vessel is scheduled to enter into a long-term transportation contract with BGN Group, a European-based energy company, for seven years from the third quarter of 2021.The new 84,000 CBM-level VLGC can navigate through both the new and old Panama Canal.

Korean H-Line Sign LNG Carrier TC with Vitol

Dutch energy and commodities group Vitol and South Korea's H-Line Shipping have executed a 10-year time-charter agreement for a newbuild, latest generation LNG carrier.The commodity trader said that the 174,000m3 vessel with XDF propulsion is to be built at Korea’s Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI) and is due for delivery in late 2021.Vitol also holds extension options and the ability to exercise additional LNG carriers to support its further growth in the LNG industry through this partnership with H-line.Pablo Galante Escobar, Vitol’s head of LNG said: “We are very excited to have concluded this contract with H-Line, a top class Korean shipowner, which represents Vitol’s second long-term charter of a modern 174,000 m3 LNG carrier.

Heavy Lift: Topside Module Delivered for Yadana Gas Field

SapuraAcergy awarded BigLift Shipping the transportation contract for a wellhead production topside module for the offshore Yadana gas field, off Myanmar. BigLift loaded the module in Ulsan, Korea, and transported it to the Yadana field, where SapuraAcergy’s S3000 would lift it off and install it onto its offshore foundation. Happy Star loaded the topside module of just under 1,000 metric tons with her two 900-metric-ton heavy lift mast cranes at Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan.

Statoil Awards Mariner Helicopter Contract To CHC UK

Statoil (U.K.) Limited has awarded the helicopter transportation contract for the Mariner field to CHC Helicopter in the UK. The contract calls for CHC to operate two Sikorsky S-92 aircraft on behalf of Statoil. The helicopters will fly from Aberdeen or Sumburgh on the Shetland Isles to the Statoil-operated Mariner field, 250 kilometres off the north-eastern coast of Scotland. The contract has a duration of five years, plus an extension option for up to three years. Diesel Electric River Push Boats Delivered

On February 21, 2014 UZMAR Shipyard, also known as “Workboat and Tug Factory” of Turkey, announced the delivery of first two most advanced diesel electric shallow draft river push boats to Brazilian Owners, Hidrovias do Brazil S.A. A total of eight ordered push boats will operate in Parana River, South America under a long term iron ore barge transportation contract with VALE. The first two push boats were transported from UZMAR Shipyard, Turkey to Uruguay by semi-submergible heavy cargo vessel in early March 2014.

High-Strength Prop to Power New Ship Through Arctic Ice

Rolls-Royce won a contract to supply a high-strength controllable pitch propeller for a new ice-breaking cargo ship which will transport nickel and copper concentrates from Canada, through the Arctic ice, to customers in Europe. Panama Canal Lock Gate Transportation Contract for Geodis Wilson

As part of a US$50-million contract Geodis Wilson will manage the transport of 16 lock gates, each weighing more than 4,000 tons, for Panama Canal expansion project. An initial vessel, carrying four of the gates will depart from Italy in February 2013 and will be followed by a further three shipments throughout the year. The project is scheduled for completion in December 2013. The new gates are part of the large-scale expansion plan by the Panama Canal Authority that is designed to double the capacity of the Panama Canal by 2014.

Crowley is First U.S. Carrier to Transport Commercial Cargo To Cuba in Nearly 40 Years

After many months of trying to gain entrance to the Cuba market, Crowley Liner Services succeeded in a big way Sunday, making the first commercial cargo delivery directly from the United States to Havana, Cuba in nearly 40 years. Crowley's Express departed Gulfport, Miss., about 6 p.m. December 14 with 500 tons of containerized frozen chicken and arrived dockside in Cuba about 12:30 p.m. December 16, approximately three-and-a-half hours ahead of a bulk ship that had departed New Orleans December 14 with corn. This was the first shipment by Crowley for Alimport, the Cuban agency involved with purchasing food products for its country. Alimport contracted with Crowley to transport containerized frozen poultry and dry food products from the United States to Cuba in late November.

Crowley Loads and Transports Frozen Poultry

Crowley Liner Services is loading containers of frozen poultry aboard Crowley's ship Express at the Port of Gulfport, Miss., for transport to Havana, Cuba. The vessel is expected to arrive in Cuba at mid-day on Sunday. This is the first shipment by Crowley for Alimport, the Cuban agency involved with purchasing food products for its country. Alimport contracted with Crowley to transport containerized frozen poultry and dry food products from the United States to Cuba in late November. The poultry being handled was purchased by Alimport and was supplied by Louis Dreyfus Corporation. Alimport, also known as Empresa Cubana Importadora de Alimentos, purchased the food from U.S.

Interesting Drydock Ops in Mexico

A novel drydocking operation has commenced in Mexico, following the successful loading of the 11,220 tonnes semi-submersible rig Mata Redonda on the main deck of Zhong Ren 3, the world’s largest semi-submersible barge. Rotterdam-based ocean towage and heavy transportation specialists Fairmount Marine won the contract for the drydocking, using the 50,000 dwt Zhong Ren 3 as the platform. Fairmount President Henk van den Berg says: “The loading of Mata Redonda was performed in complete safety at a position some six miles off Tampico, Mexico. A project team from Tampico’s Bosnar Yard is now busy on the rig’s programme of maintenance and associated works, which is expected to take around 60 days. “This is the first deployment of Zhong Ren 3 as a drydocking platform.
