HHI Demonstrates Hydrogen Co-Firing of HiMSEN Engine

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Engine & Machinery has demonstrated its HiMSEN Natural Gas/Hydrogen co-firing technology to shipowners and power generation officials.The engine has been developed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HD KSOE. First High-pressure SCR System Seals Class Approval

The first ever PBST-branded and -built cluster-3 SCR-HP system has passed its ClassNK approval test at the MAKITA works in Japan, MAKITA Corporation and MAN Energy Solutions announced.The compact SCR system is one of four – originally ordered in 2018 and 2019 – for vessels featuring MAN B&W two-stroke engines with two now delivered and the others currently en route to customers. An MAN B&W 6S46ME-B8.5 engine will power each vessel, with the SCR-HP system making each vessel Tier III-compatible.

Ecochlor to Retrofit Euronav Tankers

Connecticut-based ballast water treatment solutions provider Ecochlor announced a contract to supply seven Euronav Suezmax and VLCC tankers with a ballast water management system (BWMS).According to Ecochlor, the agreement comes with an option for Euronav to purchase an additional 30 Ecochlor systems for their vessels between 2020 – 2024.The fleet of Euronav, the owner, operator and manager of tankers transporting crude oil worldwide,  consists of ULCCs, VLCCs and Suezmaxes with some of these vessels having the highest ballast water flow rates in the tanker sector.Three of the Euronav ships to be retrofit with the Ecochlor BWMS have flow rates at 8,000 m3/hr., but will still only require one treatment system.

MAN Wins First Order for High-Pressure SCR Two-Stroke Engines

German marine engineering giant MAN Energy Solutions has announced the very first order for its SCR-HP (Selective Catalytic Reduction – High Pressure) product. According to a press release from the producer of large-bore diesel engines and turbomachinery for marine industry, Mitsui (MES) has ordered 3 × SCR-HP (cluster 3) units in connection with the building of three 87k-dwt bulk carriers for the Ocean 21 Holdings company.Each bulker will be powered by a single MAN B&W 6S46ME-B8.5 low-speed engine delivering 9,900 kW at 84 rpm, and aspirated by an MAN TCA66 turbocharger. The engines will accordingly meet IMO Tier III emission standards.

Ecochlor Harmonizes USCG and IMO Type Approvals

The provider of ballast water treatment solutions for ship builders Ecochlor announcef the complete harmonization of United States Coast Guard (USCG) Type Approval to their International Maritime Organization (IMO) Type Approval for their line of Ecochlor Ballast Water Treatment Systems.During Ecochlor’s USCG Type Approval amendment process, minor updates and improvements were made to aspects such as documentation, available filter models, and control system software, said a press release from the company.Once the USCG Type Approval amendment was complete, Ecochlor worked with DNV GL as the Recognized Organization for the Norwegian Maritime Authority to harmonize all aspects of the USCG approved system with the existing IMO Type Approval.

Emissions Regulations Present Strategic Opportunity

The marine industry as a whole is responsible for about 2.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Shipbuilders and fleet owners have spent the last two decades adjusting to shifting emissions regulations since the introduction of the MARPOL Convention 1997 Protocol, which included specific regulations for the reduction of air pollution from marine vessels. Since then, there have been additions and amendments to ensure that the industry is doing its bit to better support the environment, with the latest regulation pulling forward lower caps in global emissions.

Development on BWM highlights - IMO's R&D Forum

Ballast water management experts, meeting at the recent IMO-GloBallast R&D Forum in Canada, have showcased the latest developments in ballast water management and highlighted the areas where further research is needed, in order to prevent the spread of potentially harmful species in ballast water. Some 140 participants from IMO Member States, academia, private sector, testing facilities and the maritime technology industry were meeting at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in Montreal, Canada, for the 6th Global Environment Facility (GEF)-United Nations Development Program (UNDP)-IMO GloBallast R&D Forum and Exhibition on Ballast Water Management (16-18 March 2016), under the banner “Ballast Water Management Convention – moving towards implementation”.

Damen’s First LoFlo BWTS Delivered for RNLN Submarine

New Water Maker

ACO Marine launched a new water recovery system that is designed to give vessel owners greater capacity to reuse the treated effluent from wastewater treatment plants. The ACO Water Maker WM3 converts treated wastewater into pure distilled technical water for such applications as general surface cleaning, laundry, showering, toilet flushing, engine cooling, etc. According to ACO Marine, the unit has extremely low energy consumption and reduces a ship’s need to take on fresh water in port or to make its own water through reverse osmosis or flash evaporation – both high energy consumers. It is suitable for use onboard all vessel types and can be easily retrofitted to ACO Marine’s Maripur and Clarimar wastewater treatment solutions in addition to third party systems, the manufacturer said.

Aker, Fjords Join Forces

Aker Solutions and Fjords Processing have formed an alliance to develop technology and capabilities for advanced, cost-effective wellstream separation and treatment solutions for the subsea and topside oil and gas industry. The WellSep alliance will apply Aker Solutions' subsea processing experience and testing facilities and Fjords' topside and onshore separation technologies to provide complete solutions. Ecochlor BWTS Selected for 8 Bulk Carriers

W Marine, Inc. has selected Ecochlor, Inc. to provide ballast water treatment systems (BWTS) for installation on two newbuild 82,000 DWT bulk carriers that will be constructed in China by Sainty Marine Corporation, Ltd. In addition, W Marine has secured an option for six additional systems to be retrofit onto its existing fleet. Wärtsilä Gensets for Five New Box Ships

Five new 14,500 TEU container vessels being built for China Ocean Shipping Group (COSCO) will be powered by 20 Wärtsilä Auxpac 32 generating sets. The ships are under construction at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group yard in China, a subsidiary of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation. The order was placed in January, 2015 with Wärtsilä's joint venture company, Wärtsilä Yuchai Engine Co. Ltd (WYEC). The joint venture was established by Wärtsilä and Yuchai Marine Power Company at the end of 2012 and started production in the middle of 2014.
