Peel Ports Plays for ‘Global North’ Ambition

Jouke Schaap, Port Director for Containers at the Port of Liverpool discusses the role Peel Ports plays in fulfilling the Government’s ‘Global North’ ambition, exporting products from the Northern Powerhouse region around the world. For many businesses, exporting requires a leap of faith. Even well-established and successful companies used to trading domestically can shy away from targeting international markets. Often, the biggest hurdle is the unknown. Inexperience in logistics and getting goods from their UK origin to the final destination overseas can result in perceived difficulties – often putting companies off. However, in recent years, we’ve seen the supply chain significantly shift to become much more customer-centric. For example, we’ve transformed how we work.

What Keeps ‘Good Ship’ RINA Buoyant

When the Institution of Naval Architects was formed in 1860 it became one of the bastions of Victorian engineering, enabling and encouraging the exchange of knowledge, information and good practice in the field of naval architecture. The basic principles laid down in the early days saw the Institution thrive as a body representing all the maritime nations of the world and this was recognized in its incorporation by Royal Charter in 1910 as the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA).

Size of London Gateway Port Impresses Minister

UK Transport Minister, Stephen Hammond, goes to see London Gateway’s state-of-the-art port technology. Fully automated stacking cranes (ASCs) currently being installed at the UK’s new national hub port will increase reliability and ensure smoother, more efficient operations 24 hours a day, even in weather conditions that would force non-automated systems to close. One of the first to view the new equipment being erected was UK Transport Minister Stephen Hammond, who witnessed the first of 40 ASCs being constructed at London Gateway, which opens later this year.

Any Future for North Sea Oil & Gas?

Mark Goodall of Aker Solutions believes there is a future for N.Sea oil & gas despite the present focus on wind and nuclear energy power. Goodall explained that the low hanging fruit may have gone but there are still several significant new field developments coming on stream with others still in the planning and pre-development phases. We are also seeing the redevelopment of some existing fields with new investment in facilities upgrades to extend the viable operating field life. The North Sea is classified as a mature oil and gas region, which has passed peak production, however, as technology improves, operating companies are able to extract a far higher percentage of hydrocarbon from the reservoirs than was ever thought possible in the early years.
