High Safety Requirements for Ships in the North-East Passage

The Stena Polaris is one of the tankers in Stena Bulk’s fleet with the necessary technology, equipment and crew competence for a safe voyage via the Arctic. This is the ninth time that one of Stena’s ships will have sailed through the North-East Passage since 2011. The Russian authorities responsible for administering the North East Passage have exacting requirements on technology and equipment. Additionally, only during a few months every year does the ice situation allow ships to pass through the North-East Passage.

Classification Society BV Sharpens Ice Tools

Bureau Veritas has responded to demand for safe LNG transportation in the Arctic regions by developing new high-level tools to assess cargo sloshing in ice conditions. It has also developed a cutting-edge probabilistic method for assessing ice loads on structure which will reduce the time and data needed to assess the structure of vessels and units designed for heavy ice operation. Pierre Besse, Director of Innovation, Bureau Veritas, says, “All eyes are on the Arctic sea routes and on the opening up of the Arctic mineral and energy resources.

Bureau Veritas Extends Russian partnerships

Bureau Veritas is extending its partnerships in the Russian shipping and offshore sector, focussing on High Arctic offshore projects. Bureau Veritas and the Russian Register are working together to provide basic design review for the Shtokman FPU for the two tenderers: SAIPEM, SAMSUNG and SOFEC (SSS) and AKER, TECHNIP and SBM (ATS). The process has called for a comparison between BV and RS rules, design review and documentation review, and performance of thermal, linear and non-linear hydrodynamic and structural calculations with VeriSTAR Hull.

GL Receives Russian Flag Authorization

The Russian Maritime Authority has authorized classification society Germanischer Lloyd (GL) to perform statutory duties on ships with Russian flag. Germanischer Lloyd is the very first foreign society to be granted this right. Russian shipowners can now choose GL as their recognized organization, and thus profit from the society's longtime expertise in the maritime industry.
