French cables manufacturer Nexans has signed a framework agreement with Denmark’s global offshore wind giant Ørsted A/S and New England utility Eversource Energy to take part in the offshore wind farm development in North America.According to the provider of cabling and connectivity solutions, the agreement will reinforce their long-term partnership and will result in Nexans having the opportunity to provide up to 1,000 km of subsea high voltage export cables for Ørsted’s offshore wind farms in North America.The first delivery is expected by 2022 and the agreement extends until 2027, it said.“Our partnership with Ørsted and Eversource will accelerate the energy transition in North America and bring Nexans’ industry-leading subsea cable technology to the U.S.…

The Ports of Indiana is a statewide port authority, established in 1963, which operates three ports: two on the Ohio River, one on Lake Michigan. Port officials refer to the three as “America’s Premier Inland Port System.” They cite location, location, location, providing access via two critical freight arteries – the Great Lakes and the Inland Waterway System and proximity to the world’s most productive industrial and agricultural regions. The Ports is the only statewide port authority in the Midwest.

Vesconite is typically found on a boat as a strut or rudder bearing material, but yacht designer Scott Jutson of Jutson Marine Design has a unique application for it. He specifies the advanced polymer as a corrosion isolator on his aluminum Hysucat (hydrofoil supported catamaran) designs. Jutson uses 3mm sheets of Vesconite as an interface between SAF 2205 stainless steel hydrofoils and the aluminum hulls they're bolted to. The isolator inhibits galvanic corrosion between the dissimilar metals.

Port Manatee says it has signed an agreement to keep Del Monte fruit coming into the Florida Gulf Coast port for as many as 20 more years. Del Monte Fresh Produce N.A. Inc., which has imported fruit into the deepwater Florida seaport since 1989, is now signed to a lease extension with Port Manatee through August 30, 2021, with options for three additional extensions of five years each. If all options are exercised, Del Monte will be doing business at Port Manatee until at least 2036.

Review of U.S. The West Australian reported that Austal halted its shares from trading, and reportedly is in the process of reviewing its U.S. operation, Austal USA. Austal USA is best known for it construction of vessels for the U.S. Navy, and late last year the parent company’s price took a hit amidst reports of difficulties with the Littoral Combat Ship program. As recently as two days ago (June 28, 2016), a ceremony was hosted at the U.S. facility in Mobile, Alabama to celebrate the keel authentication of the U.S.

Trelleborg’s marine systems operation has opened a new American headquarters in Berryville, Virginia, U.S. The new site houses a 36,000 square foot manufacturing facility for foam-based marine fenders and buoys and 9,000 square foot sales and business development office. IHC Merwede opened a new yard facility in Broussard, La. The yard at 206 Cummings Road will operate under the name of Hydro-Ram, Inc. With this expansion IHC Merwede now has a regional office in North America. Hydro-Ram, Inc., consisting of IHC Hydrohammer, IHC Handling Systems and IHC Fundex Equipment - all business units within the IHC Merwede group - will be the main distributor covering the North American piling markets for the oil and gas, offshore wind, construction and coastal and civil industries. The U.S. Navy has exercised contract options funding Austal’s acquisition of long lead-time equipment associated with the construction of two additional 338 ft Joint High Speed Vessels (JHSV). As the prime contractor, Austal currently has contracts to build the first three JHSVs as part of a 10-vessel program valued at up to $1.6b. The most recent award funds the acquisition of long lead time material for JHSV 4 and 5. Austal was awarded the initial contract to design and build the first 338 ft JHSV in November 2008, with contracts for an additional two vessels awarded in January this year.

The Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce has recently confirmed that Austal topped the list of local manufacturers for having the most employees. Austal’s U.S. facility now has 1,257 full-time employees, up from just under 900 in the beginning of the year. Austal’s recruiting staff was challenged in the beginning of the year with hiring 100 qualified applicants a month and are predicted to continue to do so through May and June. Since January, Austal has added 370 new employees to our staff. The majority of the new-hires are from the Mobile/Baldwin County communities, ranging in age from 18 to 64 years, including 35 veterans. They do this through various venues…

Austal has completed its first European defense contract following the commissioning of four 69.5-ft inshore patrol craft for the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM). The aluminum vessels have a maximum speed of more than 26 knots and will assist the AFM with surveillance and border protection throughout Malta’s coastal waters. “The modern and cutting-edge technology coupled with the best accommodation facilities will also provide a better working environment for the crew,” Prime Minister Gonzi said.

The U.S. Navy has exercised contract options funding the construction of two additional Austal Joint High Speed Vessels (JHSV) – as part of an existing 10-vessel, $1.6b program. Austal previously received US Navy funding for long lead-time material, including diesel engines, water jets and reduction gears, for these two vessels in June 2009. The additional work is valued at approximately $208m. Intended as the U.S. Department of Defense’s next-generation multi-use platform, the two 338 ft high speed vessels will be constructed at Austal’s US facility, located in Mobile, Ala.

The Coast Guard and Canadian coast guard signed an agreement in Seattle to improve radar and video surveillance in Cooperative Vessel Traffic Management System waters on the international border. The agreement ensures the Coast Guard will install microwave equipment at the Canadian coast guard facility located at Mount Newton, British Columbia. The equipment will link an existing U.S. facility located at Mount Constitution, Wash., located in the San Juan Islands. A future U.S. facility is scheduled to be installed at Turn Point on Stuart Island, Wash. This facility will improve maritime safety as well as the organized flow of information within Cooperative Vessel Traffic Management System waters.
