NOAA and U.S. Power Squadrons Renew Program

This week, NOAA and the U.S. Power Squadrons, a non-profit organization dedicated to safe boating, will renew a 50-year commitment to a cooperative charting program that helps to update the nation's thousands of navigational charts. Under the voluntary program, formalized by a Memorandum of Agreement, members of the U.S. Power Squadrons scan water and land areas, looking for changing conditions that may not be reflected on NOAA nautical charts. Power Squadrons members submit their reports online, and NOAA cartographers review and incorporate changes to their navigation products. Crowley Presents Scholarships at the Connie Awards

Four exemplary United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) midshipmen were recently honored with Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarships, grants which will help support their senior year at the academy. Crowley Marine Recruiter Jenny Terpenning presented Cadets Joshua Beck, William Courtney, Michael Pluhowski and Kevan Stoeckler with the scholarships during the 2012 Containerization and Intermodal Institute (Connie Awards) lunch held Monday in Newark, N.J., an annual event attended by hundreds of maritime and transportation professionals.

The International Superyacht Society (ISS) received the following communication from CDR David G. McClellan, Chief, Prevention Operations Department, USCG Sector Miami. He has that this message be distributed to all mariners. This is critical information for persons either planning or knowing parties planning to sail in the area that transverses the seas off the Coast of Somalia in the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea South to the Mozambique Channel and East to the coast of India. Per CDR McClellan, Internet release is authorized. 1. ON 18 FEB 11, A U.S. REGISTERED SAILING VESSEL WITH 4 US CITIZENS ON BOARD WAS HIJACKED BY SOMALI PIRATES IN THE ARABIAN SEA, 282NM SE OF SUR, OMAN. DURING NEGOTIATIONS FOR RELEASE OF THE VESSEL, THE 4 US CITIZENS ONBOARD WERE KILLED.
