New Product: The CUBE Battery System

Lehmann Marine launched a new marine battery system to accompany its COBRA system. The air-cooled CUBE battery system was developed, according to the manufacturer, with a superior energy density that can be stacked flexibly for optimum use of space. Designed to be compact, modular with an innovative air-cooling technology, CUBE can be freely configured in strings of up to 1,000 VDC; scalable from a few kWh to several MWh. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells and a permanent monitoring by Battery Management System on cell, module and string level are designed to maximize safety.

Harvey Gulf Equipping Four More PSVs for Tri-fuel Ops

U.S. offshore support vessel company Harvey Gulf International has ordered Wärtsilä's energy storage system for four of its platform supply vessels.The order comes just after Harvey said in September it had completed an upgrade of its platform supply vessel Harvey Energy, making it the first "tri-fuel" PSV in the U.S. The upgrade included a Wärtsilä battery-power system on the PSV which was already a dual-fuel vessel capable of fully operating on LNG or diesel.Now, the company will have five offshore vessels capable of full tri-fuel operation…

WAGO Updates Marine Filter Modules

WAGO has updated its filter modules to include built-in ground fault diagnostics. The 750-624/020-002 and 750-626/020-002 are able to monitor both the +24 VDC and 0 VDC supply connections for impedance to ground.The filter modules are perfect for marine applications. Engineers will design in a ground fault test device to detect error resistance to Earth in marine applications. The built-in ground fault detection means there is no need for an external device for ground fault detection after a 24 VDC power supply.These multi-purpose modules will help reduce system costs and commissioning time.

Seaspan Installs BWTS on Louis Dreyfus Cable Layer

Following five weeks of repair and installation activities, Seaspan’s Vancouver Drydock (VDC) has completed its refit activities on Louis Dreyfus’ Ile de Batz Special Purpose/Cable Layer vessel. JonRie Marine Winches has launched its new Container Master Series “220” double drum bow winch, currently installed on the tug Independent, a new ASD for Marine Towing of Tampa. The new winch is designed for a larger capacity rope. This concept has been used on the Panama Canal for many years as a redundant line tethered to the ship also acts as an escort bridle, making the tug more stable in prop wash during long escorts. The twin drums also afford less loading on each rope under braking. Both drums feature JonRie’s constant tension systems.

Propulsion Under Wireless Remote Control

Verotec’s VMEbus Sails Through Shock Test

Verotec has supplied suites of five different VMEbus-based systems to a global US-based naval and marine systems integrator. The systems will be used in military shipboard applications, so meeting exacting shock and vibration requirements was a critical requirement. Each system consist of a VMEbus backplane and two military grade power converters mounted in custom plug-in modules in special subracks based on Verotec’s KM6-HD family. Extensive Finite Element Analysis (FIA) confirmed that the systems would withstand an onerous 25g shock test and also vibration to MIL-STD-167.

The No-Emissions Workboat (Really!)

There’s no debate about LNG in New York. ELCO, New York State Canals team up to retrofit 86-year old tugboat with an electric motor. In June, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the launch of an all-electric dredge tender work boat on the Erie Canal in the Utica area of New York. The project, a partnership with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), utilized an electric motor supplied and installed by Elco Motor Yachts, LLC, of Athens, New York. Significantly, the New York State Canal Corporation collaborated with Yorkville-based New West Technologies, LLC, in order to determine how best to transition the State’s work boat fleet to a cleaner propulsion system.

This concept used on the Panama Canal for many years as a redundant line tethered to the ship also acts as an Escort Bridle making the tug more stable in prop wash during long escorts. Sener Provides Second Virtual Design Center to Navantia

Sener was the winning bidder for the turnkey project for the second Virtual Design Center (VDC) of Navantia, this time for its Factory in Ferrol. This is the second with similar scope supplied by Sener to Navantia, after the first installation in the Factory of Cartagena in 2011, which is now fully operative. With capacity for 30 occupants, the new VDC has a fixed screen of five meters wide and 2.6 meters high, with overhead projector and a system of first reflection mirror due to the dimensions of the room.

Port of Huename Chalks Up Best Cargo Year Ever

The Port of Hueneme, California, realized the best cargo year it its 76 year history announcing all-time increases in import/export trade. The total tonnage for FY 2012-2013 jumped to 1,438,596 metric tons representing a 9.2% increase over FY 2011-2012, and a 2.8% increase over the Port’s previous record of 1,399,670 metric tons set in FY 2005-2006. This represents a continuing path to economic recovery bringing the Port beyond trade levels realized prior to the economic downturn.
