Brunswick Corporation announced it has appointed Alexandra Cattelan as its chief technology officer, effective immediately. Cattelan will be responsible for continuing to advance Brunswick’s ACES strategy and, more generally, for maintaining Brunswick’s position of technology leadership in the marine industry.Cattelan has more than three decades of experience leading electric propulsion and advanced mobility programs and organizations, most recently serving as vice president, engineering, connected, controls, electrification and autonomous systems for Polaris Industries.

The Royal Navy visited Saab Seaeye to view the company’s range of underwater vehicle technology designed for maritime defense. A delegation led by Commodore Alex Burton, head of Maritime Capability, toured the facilities at Fareham, which have recently doubled in size since the opening of a second factory building. The Navy said they are looking for innovative mine disposal systems beyond those currently in service. They are particularly interested in the potential offered by unmanned systems coming from Saab Seaeye’s new range of hybrid underwater vehicles.

The first of five specialist subsea application seminars organized by Kongsberg Maritime’s subsea department starts February 28, 2013 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The free one-day seminars have been developed to enable users of Kongsberg Maritime hydroacoustic systems to speak with the experts and learn how to get the most from these state-of-the art tools.

Axia Capital Partners, LP, announced that it has completed the sale of the assets and business of Hydroid to , a division of Kongsberg Gruppen, for approximately $80m and an earn-out based on Hydroid's 2008 and 2009 operating performance. Hydroid is a manufacturer and supplier of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) for military and commercial markets worldwide. The company was established in 2001 to manufacture, support and further develop the REMUS Autonomous Vehicle Technology, originally developed and licensed through an exclusive license with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Axia invested in Hydroid in December 2005 when Hydroid's revenues approximated $7.5 million. Hydroid's 2007 sales approximated $20 million and is projecting strong revenue growth in the coming years.

Kaleva, which was carrying nine passengers – including U.S. diplomatic courier Henry W. Antheil, Jr. – mysteriously exploded 10 minutes after taking off from Tallinn’s airport on the first day of the Soviet-blockade of Estonia during World War II. News of the blockade and of Kaleva’s crash was overshadowed by the Nazi occupation of Paris, which also occurred on June 14. To this day the wreckage of Kaleva and the remains of its nine passengers have never been found. Estonia’s Minister of Defense Jaak Aaviksoo requested the assistance of a U.S. Navy survey ship in searching for the downed airplane in a January 2008 letter to U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. “We are excited to collaborate with the Estonian military and to search for Kaleva,” said Capt. Allen Boyd, Jr. (D-Fla.-2), leader of the Mine Warfare Caucus, Dr. Delores Etter, Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition, and James Thomsen, Program Executive Officer Littoral and Mine Warfare, all spoke at the event. "These mission modules will revolutionize warfighting in the littorals and will fill critical requirement gaps that exist in the fleet today. We urgently need them as we continue to fight the Global War on Terrorism," said Etter.
